Do put a lead on your dog at the park?
Discussion
So, thought I would go exploring this afternoon having moved to a new area. Came across a recreation ground of which school grounds back onto. Myself with my 2 in a double pram and another lady with a young kid on baby reins. A couple of people with dogs scattered around. I decided to cut through and make my way home. I heard raised voices. I turned around and saw the lady with her kid in her arms having a go at a lady with a small dog saying "you should keep it on a lead if you can't keep it under control". Lady with dog puts dog on lead and continues walking. Halfway through big dog (like a red setter but its white with black bits) comes bounding over from afar. Its lady owner is standing there shouting at dog to come back, probably about 200 odd foot away from me. Dog comes over and starts sniffing the kids, I tell it to bugger off and try and get in between the dog and my kids and look for the woman to come take control of her dog. Woman still calling dog and slowly walking over. Dog then cocks back leg and pisses over my handbag which is hanging from the pram handle.
Now, whilst I can see there is a funny side to this, as far as I am concerned that dog was not under her control and should have been on a lead if it is unable to obey her orders. She finally came over and apologised (although sort of laughing about it). I just said sternly "Well perhaps I should have known better than to walk through a public recreation ground with dogs running around not on leads" and walked off.
Was this just an irresponsible dog owner (well, two if you count the lady with the small white dog)? Do you keep your dogs on leads in a park if there are other people/children around?
Just as well I am not into designer bags cos if it had pissed on an expensive one it may have felt a boot up its arse!

I find it immensely annoying, when taking the JR out he is always on a lead because of the way he behaves with other dogs, I used to muzzle him but we have a number of people who have dogs that will not come back to them. They will run up to my dog, he'll go fecking mental and then they decide to fight him and of course because he was muzzled there was not a lot he could do.
I don't muzzle him anymore so he can fight back but I have had a go at a few owners who let their untrained dogs off.

As a dog owner, I'd say the dog owners you describe were out of order.
Not that ours are perfect, but if there's a hint of ours misbehaving they go on the lead. We try not to let them run free in the "busy" bits of the park, especially if there are people with small children or elderly people more likely to get knocked over.
Although there was one occasion when the retriever decided to eat a small child's ice cream while it was strapped in the push chair. Fortunately the family had a retriever too, so were ok about it.

I like dogs, and don't like the thought of kicking/hurting it but with hindsight, I think I should have done something more although I doubt I will go back to that recreation ground again. I have made a complaint to the council as this is the second time I have had a bad encounter with a dog and their owners in just 2 months of moving here. The other one let it's dog crap on the beach and leave it, when I pointed it out to the old bag, she started screaming abuse at me and calling me scum lol.

If you see a really handsome gentleman exercising a very obedient yellow lab, that'll be me.

Haylands....
lol, ok, you don't get many of them for the pound over here

Mine is always on a lead. He's still a puppy so he's not fully trained yet, but even if he was I wouldn't risk either him getting into danger or him getting over excited by a small child and jumping. It's not fair on the dog to impose human rules of conduct, especially in areas where they are much less likely to obey usuall commands because they are over-excited.
Like drivers, some are good and some are

Luckily mine is so tiny he fits into all my designer bags.

That's common sense but so many people seem to lack it these days.Like drivers, some are good and some are

Hope he/she wears a nappy in your bag

Whenever I take my dog out in the park, I'll keep him on a lead through the busier parts, then let him off once we get the the more open sports field areas. He'll usually run around like a bit of a mentalist for a couple of minutes as he realises he's off the lead, but he'll then calm down and trot along in front of you, or follow scents around. If he ever strays over towards people, I'll call him back if they don't look like 'dog people'
Anyway, what harm can this do?
