It amazes me how blatantly some drug dealers operate the other side of the pond. Went to the Blue Note in New York, which is located in a fairly busy and nice part of Manhattan (between Bleecker Street and 3rd), to hear about 4 diff guys offer me drugs, separately and a couple where fairly aggressive. Never got this in central london. Im sure it is like that on some estates but not ''downtown'', to use the yank word.

They where just mumbling ''Gange, coke, pills'' every time somebody walked past. Went back the following night and saw the same guy's saying the same thing on the same block. These where not your normal 16-25 year old street dealers... one of these guys looked late 40's.

Now if I was a drug dealer... one of the main things on my mind would be not getting caught. They might aswell have been holding up a sign saying ''We sell drugs here everyday''

Also... Vegas. There must be some serious pimps working there. Each prostitute has their own card made up with a fancy pic and they pay dozens of mexicans to hand them out on the strip. I thought it must have been legal out there but apparently not.

Nope. Im sure it is like that in some parts of London but the centralness and obviousness of it in manhatten did shock me a bit.

Back in the early 90's I was living in the UK, working for a coffee distributor. One summer evening a bunch of us went to a wine bar somewhere, possibly Kingston upon Thames. During the course of the evening some guy came up to me and said "'Ere, mate...you wanna buy some, erm, coffee?"
"No thanks, not really."
"It's good coffee this...you wanna buy some?"
"No, really, I'm not interested."
"But this is really good coffee, and I'll give you a good price."
"No thanks." And at this stage I am wondering why somebody is trying so hard to sell me coffee.
"Mate, this is REALLY good coffee...and I'll sell it to you below cost!"

Finally the penny dropped, and I realised he was most likely trying to sell Colombia's other cash crop.
"Listen," I said, "if you're selling it below cost, you'd be losing money, and I couldn't let you do that. Besides, I work for a coffee company and I can get all the coffee that I need at cost. I'm really not interested, thanks all the same."

At which he gave me a funny look and realised that he wasn't going to be making a sale and buggered off.

Same in Oslo, whilst pushing a buggy ffs.

These dealers are bottom of the food chain and earn next to nothing though, they just hope to move up a rung or two. The police won't bother with them as they'll get nothing from them.

Had the misfortune to be stuck in trafic Perry bar on the way out of Birmingham.

The amount of people going up to other people standing outside shops, looking around then shaking hands(obviously passing somthing over whilst doing so)

The visitor would then stand there as the other fellow went in the shop. He would then come out again and shake hands again all the time making it really obvious they were up to something dodgy.

I must have seen around 10-12 deals in half an hour

I was on holiday in the Algarve, a little over 10 years ago, and was approached by a large morroccoan man on a busy street around midday. He was holding out a huge block of dope and saying "hashish?". I just kept walking. There was a police car on the next street as well. It was all too surreal.

Where in London have you been? I've never been offered drugs on Oxford Street or similar but if you go to Camden or anywhere near any of the big clubs there's loads of guys touting their wares. I've also seen similar behavoiur in Manchester, Glasgow and Barcelona, I think it's pretty ubiquitous to be honest. Also, if I'm in any club anywhere playing dance music I can almost guarantee that within 10 mins I'll either be offered drugs or be asked if I have any to sell.

Same sort of thing happened to me last year in Barbados. Myself and the good lady had just got to our hotel. Been there about half hour and where walking along the hotel beach had I was offered pretty much everything you can think of in the space of 5 minutes. Wasn't a crap hotel either far from it guess it's what happens when the beaches are all public.

I don't thinks it is as blatant over here in terms of the straight up offering of drugs but if you are out you can pick out the dealers a mile away.

On nights out is very bad, I've been in clubs where blokes are offering pills just inside the door from a bag in their hand, no attempt to even disguise it. I've also been asked if I'm dealing or got anything to sell a fair few times, even been asked in the middle of a busy high street a couple of times, I'm not certain but I'm quite sure I don't look like a smack head.

It really isn't that different in London. Maybe a little more subtle, but not much.

You've led a sheltered life, Padawan.

Not really. I did a fair amount of drugs in my teenage years, mainly bought through friends and friends of friends though.. never off strangers in the street.

I have never walked down a street in central London that resembles a fruit market for drugs, with black guy's standing on nearly every corner offering their goods. Surprised I didn't see a stall with a selection layed out and special offers.

I know people get offered drugs all the time in clubs and on a friday/sat night but approaching people walking down the street is plain desperate... unless your a crack dealer surrounded by crack heads.

I think everytime me and any of my mates walk up camdem high street, we play the game of seeing how many times you get offered weed before you get to the other end. Broad daylight on a weekend and you'll prolly be offered at least 3 times without even trying.

i'm a doorman and i'm standing there havin a pee - he comes up are ya sellin mate? i'm asian and i thought whattttt? he then realises i'm a doorman and starts apologising...

i look at him and say yeah and start lookin around pretending the coast was clear. come with me..

took him to the head doorman where i made it look as if i was going to get him some pills. head doorman signals him over and he's gettin ready to take his cash out when he gets put into a rather painful hold and told not to come back.

i managed to find one of the only nightclubs where the smoking ban hasn't reached, and you can smoke weed and listen to garidge and dubstep all night.
i got through the door, payed my dues, bar, slash, and on the way was offered a mitsubishi.
i was far too drunk to drive, and had already decided on a taxi.
Outside, a kind young gent offered me some white powder wrapped in tin foil, so i could compare it against other unknown powders, but i didn;t have a mass spectrometer or chromotography kit handy.

My record was 7 between my house (nearish Chalk Farm tube) and Sainsburys Camden Town...

I read somewhere the other day that the "average" street dealer in the states earns less than minimum wage!
