Lycos/Strato giving me some real pain!

Has anyone else been used by Starto Ag the company that took over Lycos' emails and webhosting? Today I received a letter from an Irish debt collecting company asking for £28 fee's for collection of a £2 domain renewal from Strato!
I bought a domain for 99p three years ago with Lycos, and some how this has been renewed, but Strato didnt have my payment or contact details so now it is some way into proceedings to collect the £2 I owe them!
I called them directly and they said the matter is no longer in their control and I have to speak to the debt collectors, however I am £42 in credit with them for a refund due in 2007.
How on earth are these companies so awkward to deal with, I have in writing that they will transfer the credit and pay me the refund due, can I ignore the debt collectors letter? Clearly paying either is not a concern and they can give the refund to charity I just want rid without damaging my credit scorng.
Can anyone advise?
