On my way to work there is a pedestrian crossing near the entrance to a primary school.

There is a council 'crossing patrol' bloke dressed from head to foot in hi-vis, cap, trousers and jacket with a nice big council logo on the chest.

His 'job' appears to be to wait for mothers and kids to come to the crossing, he then presses the crossing button and when the lights turn red simply stands waving his arms at the now stationary traffic whilst still remaining on the pavement. When the lights turn green he stops waving, the cars move off and he waits for the next 'batch' of parents. confused

My g/f informs me that she passes two more such 'patrols' on her way to work.

Do any other councils 'employ' such people? I realise they'll probably be minimum wage monkeys but that is MY TAX they're spunking away.

Do you live in Bristol?

There's dozens of the useless gits there.

Lollipop lady (sorry - person) on a zebra/pelican crossing?

Why?

I think you might have solved the national debt single handedly with that special.

I saw one of these at a pedestrian crossing this morning. Wasn't quite sure what to make of it, didn't really think they could be trying to help people cross at a pedestrian crossing.

We have them around here, they are usually a bit special, I got shouted at for not waiting for a car to completely stop one morning.

it's called 'lollipopping' amongst the chav's that do it.

the last 'lollipopper' I came across whilst doing mortgages was bringing in over £2,000 per month tax free (and living in a free house).

She only worked part time bless her.

How does that make you feel?

Errr arent they there to keep the traffic flowing to stop mothers with their precious little darlings constantly using the crossing and disrupting the flow of traffic, so infact these traffic wardens are controlling the pedestrian traffic to lower disruption to car drivers getting to work.

I could be wrong though. I may be applying too much common sense to the problem.

Eh?

Shepherding kids across a pedestrian crossing for an hour a day (I'll be generous, 2 hours) brings in £2000 a month, tax free and a free house ?!? What??

DOn't worry- its just someone lying again, for no logical reason, and irrelevantly blaming Gordon Brown for thier own lies.
Absolutely bizarre behaviour.

Pure guess but I will bet anything that the package of a lolipop lady/man is less than one tenth of what the liar suggested.

Unfounded anecdotal evidence. ON MY PISTONHEADS?! Well I never.
Did anyone else hear about the banning of the English flags on cars because of muslims?

But...but that's the PH mantra isn't it?! That Labour is the reason for every ill in this country?!

(watch some wag quote and edit this post)

Only the other day they were blamed for making polytechnics into universities and bringing down the whole higher education system as a result.

They just seem a little unnecessary when there's an existing pedestrian crossing as well. We have lollipop people at a school local to me but it is a busy junction and there are no pedestrian crossings, so seems sensible.

It's the fact they are at an actual computer controlled crossing that does everything they do already.

Think the job is more to keep the children out of the road when traffic is moving, than it is to stop the traffic smile

There's one in our area - exactly the same.

She pushes the button and "controls" the traffic.

She is a real jobsworth this one - no sooner does one single person appear and she jumps on the button...

Causes some real snarl ups in peak hour....

So what happens when the children go out with their friends and there is no "lollipop man" to help them cross the road??!??

Seriously... just teach the kids to cross the road properly in the first place....
