Two of our dogs chased something into the bushes in our garden this morning.

Both came out a bit bloodied. One has a chunk of skin cut off her snout, and a nasty gouge above right above her eye (vet said she was very lucky as any lower and she could have lost the eye).

The other had a deep gouge on his snout, and has been at the vets most of the day having stiches put in.

Both seem ok, and don't seem too bothered by the whole affair. We could not find any remains, so assume whatever it was got away.

The vet said it could have been a deer, but I don't believe this. For one, I think a deer would be too big to get in through our fences, and I know deers would not pose a problem for our dogs.

The injuries look like they have been caused by claws....big claws (certainly, the boy's injuries are consistent with a claw swipe.

Me and my brother think it could have been a badger. We found places where it looks like something has dug under the fence a bit. I do not believe it was a fox either, but cannot rule it out.

So, what do you guys reckon it could have been? Would a badger seem like the most likely suspect? None of us saw the whatever it was dart into the bushes; we only saw the dogs rush in barking.

ETA: We have two Nova Scotian duck tolling retrievers, and one duct tolling/ black lab cross......so you can understand the size of the animal we're talking about.

No CCTV footage? Guess not...

I don't know. Could be just about anything, need to rule out unlikely candidates.

I'd go along with badger. They're vicious little buggers, especially when cornered.

Definitely badger, I would say...

They are viscious if they are protecting their sett and many a dog involved in illegal badger-baiting has been killed by them.

Feisty Mr Charlie more likely. If your dogs had gone after a badger they would have come off a lot worse.

I'd go with badger but I did have a cat that got cornered by a GSD ripping his face to pieces, there was so much blood I thought the dog had killed the cat.
