There was a thunder storm here in Norway a few hours ago and I was looking out the window as I enjoy storms. There was a flash of lightening at one point which looked like a small ball (cm wide perhaps), but getting a little bigger over the very breif time it was there. It also came with a popping sound, just before the main rumble of thunder. I've had a quick look at the types of lightening but can't find anything that sounds like it. So wondering if any of the PHers in all their knowledge know what it is?

i had a similar thing happen once. years ago when thunderstorms were thunderstorms, not like what we seem to get in the uk now, i would be about 7-8 years old, so over 45 years ago but i still remember it like yesterday. it was 8pm ish and i was sitting in our living room in the settee facing the fire place (coal fire), my dad was sitting to the right of the fire place, mother to the left as they both had 'their' chairs. all of a sudden from the ceiling to the right side of the fire place a bright ball of light about the size of a golf ball slowly dropped the the floor, it made no noise and left no marks, except in my mind, but i looked at my dad, he looked at me so we both seen it but we never said anything to each other, but i knew by the way he looked at me he knew i had seen it too. so i am convinced ball lightning exsists.

We had a Florida-style storm here about this time last year. Mega lightning and thunder it was.

Ball lightning.

I saw this in Estonia on a particularly muggy night when a thunderstorm was evidently brewing.

A few distant rumbles, then all of a sudden a ball of light about the size of a tennis ball leapt out of the fireplace and did a half-circuit of the room spitting blue sparks before it disappeared into the power socket.

All electrics subsequently fubared and a scary thing to see. I hate to think what would have happened had anyone touched it.

Wigan. Can't remember the exact date but it was about mid June, and it lasted a few hours.

In Trondheim. Moved here around a month ago so just getting to know the Norwegian culture etc. Really enjoying it. Have you been in Norway long?

I should have known to check the spelling on Pistonheads before posting! Had wondered if it was wrong but posted it anyway, and not even got the excuse of being foreign or anything, since I just moved here from the UK!

I had wondered about ball lightning, but it was very quick and just in the one place, whereas ball lightning seems to move around more and last longer. Oh well!

There was a cracking storm in East Lancs around 20 to 3 this morning, the lightning didn't fork as much, but it lit the whole sky up, and I have never heard such long and loud claps of thunder before.
