Who do you use? Are you happy with them?

Need to get Floyd covered, so any suggestions gratefully received.

He has been chipped, so will have to declare that he is modified, and presumably, as fast a a 330d!!!

The problem with pet insurance is that there are an awful lot of things they wont pay for and when the dog gets to an age of starting to need things they withdraw cover. Personally I thing the best policy is to put a bit aside each month so that when there are bills to pay later in the dog's life you've still got the money instead of giving it to an insurance company during the dog's healthy years.

Petplan, no-one else comes close, they don't exclude illnesses after a year.

I agree, you pay a little more, but they dont usually mess you around when it comes to paying out. I insure our 5 animals through them, and have made several large claims in the past.

Halifax cover prescription diets and dental cover (at least they used to).... We use them on two of the dogs - but whichever one you go with make sure you will be happy to stay with them forever (check for example that they don't make you pay 20% or more of vet costs when they are 7 years old etc).

Changed from Petplan to NFU very competitive, not had to claim yet though so can't tell you how they deal with that side of things

AFI are truely wk, just had two claims turned done because of "exclusions" on the policy. They even sent me a nasty letter saying they would not cover something i didnt claim for because he had history of similar (hence why i didnt claim for it)

I agree with this. I know vets' bills can be kind of steep nowadays but if you pick the correct dog in the first place, they can be relatively cheap to run. Perhaps I've been lucky but I have never spent more on vets' fees in a dog's lifetime than a year's insurance would have cost me.

I've always been happy with the service I've had from Healthy Pets.

Seeing as it's you I'd suggest you get the best cover available! wink

We use Marks and Spencer for our dog. There is no upper age limit to the policy.

Other insurers/policies can offer the same. I found PetPlan to be a very expensive option.

I went with Liverpool Victoria Pet Insurance (they have 2 tiers, I went for the upper). Up to £5000 per condition with no time limit. I've had one claim (equal to my first year's policy cost) and they paid out hassle free.

ETA: excess is only £60 too with LV

I,m with Healthy Pets and last year the premium was £12 a month, this year its £26!!!!

Apparently it's nothing to do with the fact we made a claim for £200 last year, it's down to the underwriters looking at the number of claims for certain breeds in certain areas?? He's also over 7 now so that also makes a difference!

At the same time they've increased the cover 4k from 3 a year but increased the excess to £75 and the amount i have to pay of any claim to 25% from 20.

I had a look at the post office who were offering 5K cover a year for £18 a month but not had chance to look a the small print yet.

Another vote for NFU.

And, as they are a mutual, the profits get redistributed amongst the members, so, Murphy's insurance dropped bt £20 this time around!!

Look at nPet Plan, they are the gold standard, if you can't afford them look for the following:

Either another cover for life ins or one that pays a minimum of £7.5k for a medical condition, they pay out until it's used up.

Avoid any co that will only cover condition for 1yr, no good for lifelong condition.

I use sainsburys so far they have covered every ins claim for my cat and dog inc £4.5k for my cat post rta (she'd have been put down if it wasn't for ins, no way we could afford it) and £1.2k for my dog after a horrendous wound from another dog.

They have only disputed one claim but after a letter from the vet they paid.

Insurances do cost and you may never ue them but the peace of mind is great and as you can see can be definitely worth while.

Read through a few look at pro's and cons, your vets may do their own ins, I assume you got some free ins cover from the breeder.

Avoid 12months cover, those that pay upto a certain amount but only in the first year of claiming and those that will pay out for longer but less than 6.5k

Pet plan will pay upto 4k min (basic cover) per year, but on renewal this is reset for each condition claimed for.

I hope that helps and is not more confusing!

Another recommendation for petplan here, they have always been good with us over the years especially through a couple of very large claims.

We use Tesco pet insurance.

We've had to put in a couple of claims in the last 18 months and they have paid out without fuss.

When we first got the dog, we were talking about insurance with the vet, who advised us to avoid Equine and something, or something and equine because "they're st"

I use PetPlan for Leonard, our Irish Wolfhound. He costs more to insure than my 2010 Camaro!! Apparently, he's an expensive hound to run. Make sure you take out a 'for life' policy, and you should be OK for when he gets older.
