Earlier today a 10 plate discovery pulled up and out jumped 2 rather large men in sombre suits, feering the worst I armed myslef with hosepipe.

After a brief dicscussion it appeared that they were looking for somebody who lived at number 5 flat and not me, number 5 house.

They were there to reposses their car and 'other' business.

Ended up having a nice chat with them and they let it slip that their company were looking for additional members to train up starting off as a few evenings a week, now I am not overly enthused about my current work situation but also not in any hurry to change.

Just wondering if anybody has had any experience in this sector, have any advice to offer or should I just knock the idea on the head now?

I'm sure at the moment it's a growth area.

Give it a go, by all means, but be prepared for everyone to think you're a .

ETA: WTF were you gonna do with a hosepipe? Sprinkle them to death?

It's pretty horrible being involved in some of the most miserable parts of people's lives, Despite them often having brought it on themselves.

Job satisfaction nil if you have any compassion for your fellow man.

Plenty of work and probably ok money too, though.

yes

Be prepared for people using their kids as ammo to stop you taking their stuff, and being verbally abused and threatened because they hadn't paid their debts.

A mate of mine was a private detective but often went along to house repos in the last crash. some of the stories he told me of arriving to repo a house to find the wife and kids carrying on as if nothing was wrong because the husband had neglected to tell them the mortgage was that overdue were heart-rending.

I'm not hard enough to leave a woman and (as on one occasion) 3 kids under 5 sitting among their possessions on the pavement outside what was their house.

You'd have to be pretty hardened to lifes knocks to do a job like that. I'd imagine you'd see every kind of hardship, sorry tale and bit of crap life has to throw at you. I'd also imagine you'd see every kind of lie, story and devious excuse the world has to offer!

I wonder how one phrases the ability to intimidate and handle a slap or two on the job description? "Must look tough, be mathematically minded and have a mean right hook?" biggrin

After leaving the Police my Dad worked as a collector for a TV firm, but often had to deal with bad debts and reposessions. One such trip ended with the guy whose TV he had to reposess being arrested for attempted murder after throwing a TV from the 3rd floor window at my Dad.

I suppose if you had any leaning towards creative writing you could do it for a year then write a book.

I was looking into doing it some time ago - I fit the PH Internet Hardman Profile --

- 6ft
- "I have done martial arts"
- "Fight like ten truckers"

and that aside, fairly thick skinned and don't really care what people think.

I was curious as to how they get paid though - is it per job, or a %age of the amount of the debt etc?

I'd say it would be a busy job but alas I wouldn't have the heart for it. Some 'customers' might be contemptible but many I would imagine would just be extremely unfortunate.

I so can't believe this hasn't been moved to Jobs & Employment. Do mods get the weekend off hehe

You need to lodge a £10k bond with the County Court and prove you are a fit and proper person to become a certificated bailiff (Someone who can legally collect unpaid Council Tax and Council parking tickets (PCNs) )

I worked as a repo agent for years, but never houses, my other half would draw the line at that.
I can also sympathise as my house was taken back in 1991, so know both sides.
I used to collect about 10 cars a week and £150,000 a year for the finance cos I worked for, but its feast or famine, either loads of work or non, the bailiffs are paid on results, hence the way they go about their business, the more they collect, the more they earn.

The 10 plate Disco may have been a car they've already repo'd, I was always driving around in cars I had taken, especially if there was fuel in them!!
If they are private bailiffs they do not act for the courts, and generally scare people into paying their debts, so not a job I was prepared to do although it was offered to me by the company that was on the tv programme.

If you want to work long hours, not knowing what work was coming in and are single then fine, but I was certainly glad that a job came along that had paid holiday, sick pay, flexi-time and every week-end off.
Lets face it, most cars are at home early am or in the evening, so that's when you'll be working, weekends too.
HTH.

Add to the other posts that you will probably be working for big companies that could readily dismiss the debts from their multi-million £££ profits - I don't know how they sleep at night. It a stty job and someone will do it, I'd just never be that someone.

Strikes me as being the Sheriff of Nottingham's tax collectors rather than Robin Hood - who did you like best as a child and what did you think you would become?

Not an entirely fair comparison as Robin Hood was written as the hero. One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. We also know that stealing from the rich to give to the poor (see 'Labour Government') doesn't work because then the poor get lazy and the rich get unmotivated.
