My brother is stuck in Luton after having had a week with his new girlfriend that has flown over from Croatia for a week together.

She had her passport stolen/lost yesterday and was due to fly home this morning. I know, it does all sound a bit much but there it is.

They have run out of cash basically, and it has all gone a bit wrong. Their own faults to a degree but st happens, and want to bail him out as well as I can.

I have given him my CC details to top his phone credit up, and he has £37.00 left in M&S vouchers for food. half a tank of fuel and he is in a jam for sure.

The point is I want him to have £200 cash today. How can I arrange this do you think?

He has a Co-Op CC which is Visa electron, but I imagine a transfer would take a few days to clear?

Please, any ideas folks?

Thanks,

I know, you couldn't make it up could you?

Nick

Send money via one of the many money transfer companies available such as Western Union. Not cheap but immediate.

Nick

If you get really stuck I am at AL6 / Welwyn about half an hour from Luton, I can give him the cash and you can paypal me as a gift.

If I can be of any help let me know, can your bank not hand it to him at a branch perhaps.

Get him to buy one of those pre-pay dedit cards (there is a name for them but I can't remember what it is) then get the card info from him and add money over the phone. Not sure of the time frame but it would be pretty quick I think.

Drive down there and give it to him? Seems like a good excuse for a run out tank

If you physically walk into a branch of his bank with £200 in cash it'll be on his card as soon as their computer system refreshes. I do this all the time for my sisters / wife / brother in law and various other incompetent family members...

As alfa pint said. Pretty simple really. Or transfer it I'm with Halifax and when I transfer money it's instant to any bank.

Western Union is quite reasonable I thought, I wired £200 to a mate in Thailand a couple of times and it cost about £20 a go which I thought was reasonable considering. I expect the closer you are the cheaper it gets.

This. As long as you know his account number/sort code, or can get hold of them. I've done it before too, with similarly incompetent family members. To be fair, if you ask nicely and can prove your own ID, I can't see them refusing to take the money even if you don't have the AN/SC.

i know it of no help, but if his girlfriend lost her stuff, why is your brother stuck?
why has she not gone to seek help and what happened to her money? why has your brother got no way of getting money, he is in the uk with id and enough petrol to get home surely?

other than that, id pay the money into his bank over the counter for his instant use and then be asking a lot of questions

Thank you ALL so much. I have called my bank and they have made a direct transfer and it will be cleared onto his CC in 2 hours. smile

He should be ok now. He was treading close to the line with his finances already, but this loss of passport has completely screwed them.

I would hate to be in the London area and try to find/renew a passport, so I don't envy them.

I could have driven down there yes, but I have way too much to do here!

Again, thanks guys, I love you all!

P.S. Feel free to rip the thread top shreds with bad taste jokes now. I see a few have already started lol. wink

Craig, You're a bloody diamond. Thank you so much for your true Dunkirk/PH spirit!!

I have arranged a direct transfer between banks, so he should be sorted now.

Again, thank you.

They had both come to the end of a week long break which I suppose they could ill afford in the first place. My brother has just come out of a long term relationship and is effectively 'broke'. I think he sold some hardware to pull together enough cash to meet with this girl after (I gather) a long term connection via the internet.

I assume she came over with minimal funds also, so this turn of events has caught them both out. There was no room for error, but an error there was. He didn't have enough fuel to get from London to Bristol no, and they need to go into central London I believe to sort this passport/embassy thing out. Obviously he's sticking with her to help. Hardly gallant to say "Well you sort it love, I'm off home!"

Thanks,

Nick
