Not sure what the correct forum for this is, but...

Had a nice letter from the tax man saying I under paid on my self assessment by 1p. Which is nice.
It does say that as its a small amount, I can pay it next time, and pay interest on it.

Does anyone know if I can just pay the 1p next time in addition to the next amount due, or will they fine me/charge large amounts of interest? I guess not, but you never know with HMRC.

Thanks

Christ. However much it cost to process that letter / postage etc, to chase 1p.

Fabulous.

Tell him it's quits.

Tell him that V8mate's tax return was for zero but he still sent me a bill for 1p. Which I paid.

I had that before and rang up saying what a waste. Anyhow they said the above, wouldn't write the amount off and would charge interest. I wasn't happy with interest so in a mood paid them a 2p coin and god a full receipt and a cheque for the 1p change......

Probably employed three staff on £20k each to sort that for you.

I wonder how much money would be saved by writing a line of code into their database that automatically wrote off all debts under £1?

I would then pay 99p less on purpose.

You b@stard. It's people like you, the bankers and the non-doms that have got this country into the state it's in now. I'm calling the Daily Mail.

I would hazard a guess to say a maximum of £1000 inc integrating said code into their current system.

This farce (as it will have happened more than a few times) will cost them a lot of tax payers cash over the years..

fking time wasters

Before the introduction of Self Assessment the Inland Revenue (as was) had a policy of writing off amounts under £20. Becaiuse Self Assessment is largely automated, they abolished this sensible approach and now leave all debts lying on the books.

So, yes, they will charge inteterst on the 1p amount and yes, it could cause you a problem at a later date if you were relying on a clean bill of health from HMRC - such as when applying to be a Sub-Contractor in teh Construction Industry.

I thought the tax man didn't deal in pence - only pounds?

Thats good to know - I'm leaving the country at the end of August so want my tax affairs sorted. I guess I'll send them a cheque!

It is actually my accountants fault - I paid what they told me and they submitted the return. Perhaps I'll get them to pay it for me scratchchin

One of our client companies received escalating demands for an outstanding sum of £0.00. No amount of phoning or writing could clear it out of the system, so we sent a cheque for the full amount. That seemed to satisfy them smile

That's the really annoying thing, it would be bad enough if they were only wasting their own time, how much money does this cost the private sector in wasted man hours FFS!

Every couple of months I get a cheque from the Halifax. A cheque i never cash. I closed all my accounts with them a few years ago but I still get a restribution cheque... 12p. I'm happy for them to keep wasting money sending it
