Uni students these days
Discussion
I still live in Leeds, where I went to Uni in the mid-late nineties. I occassionally travel through Headingley and continue to be amazed by the number of students I see driving nice/newish cars. The MINI seems particularly popular with the ladies. Now, when I was at Uni I shared various hovels with some pretty well-off (well at least there parents were)chaps, however the only one who ever had a car was some battered old Renault 5. It seemed that even though parents helped out with living expenses (rent, bills etc..) none of them got big handouts from their parents.
What's the deal these days, are students just living on extra credit because they figure they're going to be up to the eyeballs anyway, or are parents being more generous and buying for them? Or are students being more pushy and asking for a car/handouts.
Yours perplexed.

As a student until very recently I noticed this. A lot of people with cars, I didn't really understand how they could buy and afford them. Particularly when I was at Imperial - it seemed that almost the reast of the class had one, whereas Aberdeen had a lot, but certainly less. I think some is loans, some is parents providing for them. And a lot of them would end up going "I have to ask my parents for some money as I've run out. I feel really bad about it...".
I went to Leeds. Everyone I met was from down south mostly and a lot of them had their dad buy houses as an investment for them to live in and rent out. It does seem to attract a lot of the wealthy Southerners. I made a some very good friends there though, which is good as I moved down south shortly after Uni.
Just finished uni at Birmingham, I lived at home, worked and put up with a piece of s
t car so I could go to uni, other students I know seemed to have a lot of things handed to them by their folks, I knew of a few people who had been handed golf gti's and brand new BMWs.
While I have no problem with this the divide in the student population was quite clear, in my eyes at least, there were those of us getting by and those on easy street, I can't imagine it being good for them in the long run but what do I know.

I knew a lot of DBIs (Daddy Bought It) at Oxford, 10 years ago now, it's not new, but I guess has gone global (at least countrywide)
I never had a car at uni, but would bet all the money in my pockets against all the money in their pockets (that is their own) that I now have a nicer looking garage, and apartment, than they do... all gained through my blood sweat and tears. I know which route I prefer.

About 50% of the houses on my street are student rentals. It's been a real pain getting parked for the last few years, with 4 or 5 cars trying to get parked outside each house, again mostly recent, decent cars from the bank of Mum & Dad.
This last year has been very different, with far fewer cars around, and some of the student houses not being let at all this last year.

What do you think they use their student loans on?
It's one of the reasons that I think so many end up with debt, they spend money they do not have and because the media hype up "student debt" nowadays they expect people to feel pity for them. In reality, they're just pissing it up the wall (and in some cases literally!)
I had a nice looking car at uni, however it was £3k and something I could afford to run and looked as though it was worth more than it was
Also I left Uni with no debt as I had a part-time job I worked at the same time and managed my finances

I had a car, a cheap 1992 Fiesta when I started uni 9 years ago. I sold it to my sister in the first month to fund a new computer as she'd just passed. 4 months later, I was sick of public transport and not having a car. I ended up buying another banger Fiesta which cost me £800. Paid for it and kept it running through a bar job which I had. It blew up in my 3rd year where I then (rather foolishly) bought a Rover 200 for £3k (Inheritance from my Nan). There were plenty of people (particularly girls) knocking about in nearly new £12k+ Mini's and in some cases, there were people driving about in new A3's and 3 Series. Quite amazing really, but my student debt is down from a £10k high at graduating to about £4k now. Still a student tax on my wages but it'll be gone in a few years. Some I know still have double figures from the time they were there with me.
