Chaps,

Just sold something on Ebay and the person who won the auction wants to pay via a Postal Order, however a slight problem, I do not know what a postal order actually is!

Can someone explain?

Apologies for the ignorance!

.... a postal order can be bought at the Post Office for whatever amount.....it's like a guarenteed cheque.....and you can cash it at the PO or indeed bank I think.....I didn't know they still did them.

Almost as good as cash but safer to send through the post.

Two types - one is crossed with your name on it, it has to be paid into the bank like a cheque, but will not bounce.
The other is blank or uncrossed, and is effectively cash. When you go to the PO with said ebay parcel to post, they can exchange it for you.

Anyway, what sort of luddite doesn't use paypal or bank transfer for ebay these days?!

Safer than a cheque.
can be exchanged for cash at bank or a P Office can also be paid into a bank account, building society. But i think there is a limit to how much can be exchanged at one time.
People use this instead of cash as there is a paper/serial trail to it.
So if you sold something dodgy and was paid in a po they can always track it down as proof of payment.

Great thanks guys,

So am I right in thinking I would give the seller my full address, they would go to the post office, pay the amount and the PO would send me this postal order and I simply go to the post office or bank and cash it in?

The person paying goes to the PO and buys the postal order. they then get given a piece of paper that looks liek a cheque and send it to you.

you then have to go to the PO and cash it in.

IIRC

Your buyer purchases the postal order from the post office and sends it to you. You then take the postal order to your post office where they will exchange it for cash. Comprende?

Did you specify postal order, or "other" as payment option?

Your choice if you didn't, and don't want to accept it. Was the sale worth it?

Slightly O/T, what are the chances of postal orders being counterfeit? I'm not suggesting that is the case here, merely curious.

Well, no, not really. If there's no name on it and it's not crossed, then any unscrupulous postie can cash it in. Can't do that with a cheque.

Got a few in the past, better than the cheques for seller that's for sure.
Cash the same day (uncrossed), all is well.

No reason at all not to want to accept it. They are the ideal way for a seller to receive payment. Can't bounce, guaranteed cash on the day of receipt, no sneaky-arsed st of taking the money back afterwards or the other stty things that paypal do. If I was into selling stuff on ebay and they didn't force you to accept fking paypal I would specify postal orders as the only acceptable method of payment.
