I did it for many years. A few distant friends still do it. It can be very geeky, but it isn't always - as with everything it depends on the group you go with.
I definitely found the vampire types very wet - I did fantasy (KOTS, F&H), sci-fi (think Aliens rather than Star Trek), and old-school horror, which could all be a great laugh.
It's definitely worth a try. It might not be to his taste, but he might find he enjoys it a lot.

i did it once! i really enjoyed it, but saying that, i dont think i could do it too often, it's just too nerdy
once was an experience but to actually do it again n again is not on the cards.
Anyway, they told me you could hit people as hard as you want with those rubber swords, sorry again to Paul who I knocked down n made his mouth bleed.

Makes Max Mosely's hobby look positively normal.
I've done quite a bit in the past. It's a giggle so why not. I was quite good at the combat, funnily enough. "Buying" healing potions was good - the healer always used peach schnapps. 
Oddly, my fighting skills weren't so good after "healing". I'm sure that is not how it happens in Middle Earth!
