He has some problem with his mouth, so we called the vet, who sedated him and found some infection in his mouth. The dog, Jack, is about 8, and from a bad home and has had some horrible treatment over the years. He's bitten me once already in panic, when I tried to pick him up. Mind you, we've only had him a couple of months ourselves.

Now he is coming round and is terrified, desperately trying to stand up, but he keep banging to the ground, even though we have gloves on and we try to guide him. I'm scared he might bite again in fear or panic.

I guess by the time anybody reads this he'll be recovered, apart from a bad hangover.

He has had his rabies shots.

Bless him. He only bit you cause he was scared and in pain. Fingers crossed the little guy makes a full recovery.

Fear not! He's just a bit confused why he's feeling like he does following the jab. He will recover just fine smile Our Lab has been sedated a couple of times now for minor ops and he got very panicy each time, even whining which was most destressing for us, seeing him in discomfort.

Hi hope he is feeling better now.

In these situations the best thing to do is:
Put in a small room with dangerous objects removed
Keep quiet and allow them to get on with it (unless really hyped up a throwing themselves around)
Give time, pop in regularly to check on them.

The problem is animals do not understand that sitting out the effects of a sedative is the best approach, their natural survival instinct to get back on their feet asap kicks in.

If you need to pick him up, use a towel around his shoulders this will protect your hands if he does snap.

One of our house rabbits was sedated and few months ago for an x-ray. When we got her home she was quite dopey. She tried to jump out of her cage and missed and hit the front of the cage. When she did finally get out she had to sit near to the wall as she couldn't really stay upright properly.

We locked her in her cage with a cover on and left her in peace and quiet for a few hours. This seemed to work and when we next went to let her out she seemed fine.

As has been mentioned above, unless the dog is thrashing around I would leave him somewhere quiet for a few hours.

Yes, he seems to be back to his normal self now. We put him round the side of the house where it is all grass, and I helped keep him upright until he could get his bearings.

He seemed to be terrified of laying down and desperately scrabbled to stand up, poor little fella looked confused and scared, but now he is okay.

He has some sort of infection/swelling under his tongue, something to do with glands, and he is on antibiotics now. The vet says it may work, hopefully, but if not he may need an operation to sort.

We're in the Philippines, and most of the conversation was with my wife, in Tagalog, but the vet also explained some to me.

The vets house call, sedation, examination, plus antibiotics, plus rabies and distemper shots for our two new pups, came to £40 biggrin

The pups came as 'rescue' dogs too, abused and treated with indifference and callousness, like most dogs over here are.

Here they are in their temporary home:

They would do, given half a chance! And especially as they are properly fed and nourished. You should see the state of some of the mangey curs they will eat though. yikes
