Just after some suggestions here on the best way to get a ring through airport security without alerting my girlfriend. My initial plan was to put it in my camera bag, although my Dad has said that 9 times out of 10 they open his camera bag up and examine the contents, so I risk being found out there.

I could hide the ring in my wallet and leave the box inside one of my shoes inside our case, which involves the risk of her finding the box before I can retrieve it.

Stick with the camera bag suggestion and if they start to go through it, quietly ask if they can conduct the search in private, but this looks like the ultimate way of raising her suspicions.

Plant drugs on my girlfriend and whilst she's getting the rubber glove treatment I'm then free to waltz through security.

So has anyone got any better suggestions, or got experience of doing the same and what worked best for you?

Push her through the metal detector first and then have a quick word with the security guy that'll be standing in front of it.

The ring might just fit, although I risk tearing something on the diamond, but it's the box I'm most concerned about, she may wonder why tears would be running down my face and when I started walking like John Wayne.

Erm, why not put the ring in an envelope in your hand luggage? If leaving the country, you will only go through security checks, not customs, they will only be looking for explosives and weapons, they won't bat an eyelid at a piece of jewellery.

Can't you just stick it in your hand luggage? Doubt it will attract any attention what so ever.

Wear it, and wink suggestively at the airport staff.

Yeah, my hand luggage is going to be my camera case, so I can quite easily tuck it in there, but if they want to check through that, she'd most likely spot the little wooden box for what it is.

Why would she spot it? She won't be looking through your camera bag, they will. It is very unlikely that they will empty it onto the table. They will likely just look though it.

Put it in your washbag.
If you ahve a normal mans washbag containing all the usual items

half empty toothpaste,
lots of fluff,
old cotton buds (perhaps used)
a selection of manky toothbrushes,
several containers of various soaps stolen from hotels
a couple of old deoderant lids
some more fluff
a new deoderant
the remaims of a lot of shaving foam from leaving the can lid off last time,
a load of change in various world currencies
a few leaky biros
some emergency aftershave
some more fluff
some old plasters
more fluff
a pair of rusty cufflinks

then she won't go near it at any point...

If this is locked in your suitcase - then no worries - unless you're going somewhere really dodgy. (e.g. if you're flying through jo'berg etc then just keep it in your pocket in an envelope and leave the box at home...)

Put it in the Bag.

The Security guys will guess, and unless being complete arses, won't let on.

put it on your key ring, with all the shiny shiny metal on there she would have to have eagle eyes to notice it, she probably wont see it at all if you shove her through first. Failing that, find a keyring that can be opened up and place it inside. either way, keys are keys, why should she look at them especially hard.

I regularly take camera equipment through and have never had it search - ever. Otherwise just in your carry on bag or jacket pocket as suggested above...unless you're acting shifty then nothing will be searched.

Stick it in your hand luggage, in an envelope/wrapped in a note, saying something like "I am going to propose with this ring, please don't spoil the surprise".

If, and it is a big if, they do want to look at it, they will be warned. They aren't stupid.
