Don't think that really needs an accompanying comment.

Read that earlier on Gizmodo. Was a funny thing to have on a gadget site. Fascinating though.

A couple of years back I visited Elvington Air Museum in Yorkshire, and they had a display of survivors stories and artwork from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It was powerful stuff, and I'm really glad I saw it.

It was such a dick move on the Americans part..
No regard for civilian life.

I don't think the "Many more would have died had they not dropped the bomb" argument is valid at all. The people that would have died were soldier on both sides.

Not innocent civilians going about their every day lives.

Yes I am aware of the atrocities committed by japan against the chinese.

I still don't believe it was right.

I understand that more people died from the fire bombings than from the nukes. Continuing the fire bombing could have been worse. It wasn't a good move in my mind either but they weren't responding to the incendiary attacks.

I shall read the op link now but can imagine it is hugely sobering.

Frankeh,

Did hitler show much regard for civilian life when he ordered the bombing of Coventry or London?

The dropping of the atomic weapons effectively ended the War against Japan.

I've seen films/documentaries before where victims are interviewed, it makes terrible reading but it makes you want to cry when you see the person talking there as well.

It's a bit like when you see interviews of holocaust survivors who just say "yes, my father and brother were taken away and I never saw them again"....

Sobering stuff.

Not really comparable. About 70,000 people were killed instantly from that one bomb, that's more than the entire civilian casualties the UK suffered during the whole of WWII. That doesn't include those dead from fallout either.

Two options faced them both with huge loss of life. Invade or blockade. Either way more would have died. Japan had already shown what it was capable of.

Not saying bombing anyone is nice but the tone was set once the tanks set off in the beginning.

Interesting insight.

Thinking about this happening today, has atomic weapons technology progressed insomuch that an atom bomb being dropped today would be much more devastating?
