Having just procured some new garden chairs I am reminded of my childhood, when "garden chair" meant "deckchair" of the ilk that had stripey fabric, notched rear legs and a sort of "prop" type adjustment. If you didn't use it properly it could sever fingers.

It seems that it is now very difficult to buy garden chair that will maim kids. Which got me to thinking, "what other things did we survive as children?"

Grandad got one to fold up on my three year old at the weekend! There were lots of tears but it was quite amusing!!biggrin

Ours are Homebase hardwood ones and pretty good quality for the price.

Games of "British Bulldog".

Which I believe has now been pretty much outlawed in schools across the UK.

Scrumping, which incidently, seems to have died out due to modern day scrotes having easy access to guns and knives

Jumping off swings or the top of a slide onto tarmac. The slides were more than five feet tall as well.

I used to love playing that on our concrete playground at school, & survived to tell the tale.
The scars are a fond memory.cloud9

Also from the age of around 9 or 10, I used to disappear across the fields around our village, I used to be gone all day every weekend / school holiday & nobody used to worry.

we stil have a million year old deck chair in the garage. IIRC it is a green fabric with orange stripes (very eighties).

The pop gun (cut the string, goes further than you expect)
The NERF gun (modified it a bit with a drawing pin blu-tacked to the end and shot my brother)
Spud gun (shot my mother in the eye with it once, she was fine but it got thrown in the bin)
Kettle car go-kart (the chain drive was open and very closely positioned between your legs)
Elastic band with paper pellets (everyones got into a lot of trouble with these)

Also, that big netting that they had at playgrounds made of that blue rope that you had to climb up. I got my head stuck in between the mesh once and couldn't get it out. That hurt a lot, but was very funny.

Shocking, isn't it.

I was chastised at the weekend for setting a bad example to some friends kids for demonstrating a wheelie on my mountain bike.

Not for the act itself, mind you. For doing it wearing flip-flops and shorts, and not the full cycling kit.

Kudos to you that you can do it. I did an endo on my MTB to impress my 4-year old and he said, "oh, I thought you could do a proper one, not a little one like that".

I struck him.
