Yes that's right you all have to pay me a pound for a service that you haven't used........

What's that you say? Unfair? Ridiculous? Absurd?

No it's a well known telephone supplier. In fact the best known one in Britain.

I use my phone line purely for broadband, this months bill (which I will come to in a sec) has a charge of £1 for (and you will love this) not using my phone line. Seemingly to avoid this charge in future I need to use my phone for 2 calls a month which can be inclusive calls..........Yes they want me to use something for free or they will charge me for not using it.

Where the hell is the logic?

Now I'm an easy going bloke but this is the last straw in a ridiculous line of problems.

The above may be ridiculous but for 9 months now I have been trying to get them to send me a bill.

Yup they wouldn't send me a bill.

Paperless billing had been turned on and seemingly the idiots in Mumbai can't turn it off. Meaning I had to log on every month to pay the bills or receive red letters. Yup they can send final demands but not bills. Idiots.

Everytime you ring with a problem regarding the above you get promised by "Bob" that the problems is sortings Sir, can I be helpings you with any more convernings Sir?

Well "Bob" you could try doing what you keep promising to do.

Ringing to complain is a waste of time for exactly the above problem.

Moral of the story? For gods sake use anyone but **.

Maybe you should phone someone who cares. It would save you £1 hehe

Why not just refuse to pay them the £1. Just thinking about chasing you for it will cost them more than £1 so they won't bother...... or will they.

If they do you can at least take some pleasure in knowing you cost them more trouble than it was ever worth.

The trouble is that the reality is that the hassle to me is not worth a pound.

They know this and rely on people just accepting it. This is of course on top of having to pay for the privilege of paying by another means other than DD. To be blunt I wouldn't trust these muppets to find their arses with both hands and a map, I sure as hell don't trust them with the ability to pull money out of my account at will.

Do calls to their call centres count? If they did Id just phone them twice and month and waste more of their time and money.

Don't worry too much. My old ISP has decided that they are now my phone provider and are threatening me with legal action because I am refusing to pay for a service they do not provide (and have never provided)

They cut me off last week. I can't say I noticed.

B* are indeed a bit of a monster. They seem to have departments after departments after departments with no communication structure between them. I have spent months trying to sort simple problems and have been brought close to tears with frustration with their idiosyncrasies.

As for the enforced freebies, I've had it twice recently.

Firstly in Burger King they were doing a cheese burger meal for £2. A burger meal was still three-pound-something. I have to confess I did ask for a cheese burger meal without the cheese a few times and only got refused once (so was effectively paid to eat the cheese)

Other is Sainsburys wonderful £3 meal deal. It rang through for me once at four-pounds-something. It turned out that only the 750ml bottles of water were included in the deal. For taking a 500ml bottle instead they wanted to charge a good deal more.

BT are doing a similar thing. You can pay a years rental up front and it works out at £9.50/month so about 20% less than paying monthly, OK only a couple of quid but still a saving.

If you don't make 2 calls a month they charge you an additional £1.50/month. Thing is, they can be inclusive calls i.e. non-chargeable.

Total piss take IMO as the line is, like the OP, solely for data not voice.

I think BT might be the firm the OP's talking about

I despise BT. Haven't used them for over 10 years, having got sick of their arrogant, fk you attitude to customer service.

I wrote to them with the final complaint, promising them I would never use them again, and would advise anyone else to steer clear of them too. They've never had a penny more of my money since.

I know people have problems with Virgin too, but I've used their customer services enough times to find them in a different league from BT.

I may indeed be describing that very problem and supplier.....

I just wish there was a way to plug the computer in to the wall and pay x amount per month without the hassle of a line rental too, it seems a stupid way of doing it. Trouble is where I live ** is the only viable option as to go down any competitors (who have good deals on) as soon as you enter my tel. No to do the check it bounces back as either no chance or yes you can but it's an extra £10 a month which makes getting away from the idiots at telecom house a very expensive luxury.

You've probably already checked, but are you in a Virgin Cable area? No need for line rental if you are and get a cable broadband deal with them. www.virginmedia.com

I'm with Virginmedia, have tried to cancel my landline costing me £11 per month as I only ever use it now and then to phone America, I could alter my mobile package which would work out cheaper than paying for a landline I never use, the answer from Virgin...if you cancel your landline your whole package cost (broadband/tv etc) will go up!

My old provider (who've taken over from NTL) carefully explained the procedure for finishing our phone/cable/net contract, when we left the country a few months back.

I duly complied, told them the leaving date a month or so in advance. I sent the cable box back and also phoned them to disconnect the phone, the day I left the country.

A month after we left I cancelled the direct debit as they had taken nothing for over a month.

A month after that my dad received a (redirected) letter from them, telling me that I owed £7 and if I didn't pay an outstanding bill they would cut the phone and cable service off....... rolleyes

He explained everything, but they would not listen, so he told them to go ahead and cut off our already disconnected service. We've heard nothing since.

Thing is I'm sure I'm not the only one but the main reason for this hassle is foreign outsourced phone operators who can't be trusted with any power to actually sort problems out as they are useless.

I'd much sooner pay double the price for a service that provides what I actually want, get rid of Bob and John and relocate the call centre in the Uk with Achmed and Sanjita wink

Seriously though I know it's down to cost why these companies don't realise that the poorer your support staff the more you get the backs up of customers and they go elsewhere I don't know.

True. I had to phone BT last year to ask them to stop sending me spam (unsubscribe emails had had no effect), and got through to a very polite but completely pointless Indian call centre worker who spoke insufficient English to help. Just confirmed my contempt for the company.

Teach you for using BT!

I got so tired with incomprehensible bills, free offers that cost £9.99pcm, stupid 'Options' and the sheer inability to talk to anyone to get anything fixed that I changed to TalkTalk.

Every month or two a foreign-sounding johnny rings me up and tries to sell me free broadband, which I can deal with. They get most perplexed when I tell them I don't want to 'save money'.

Oh good God. In our student house about a year ago we thought V would be a good company to use for a our internet, phone and tv. Never, ever, ever, ever again!

We finally got internet in December (moved in 1st September), have had to have two new TV boxes for which we've had to skive off uni to let the engineer in for, internet signal was ridiculously poor (forget anything with videos or photo-heavy sites) until February when apparently half of my city's Virgin users held a sit-in in the local Virgin shop. Finally decent internet (well, much less than 20Mb (actually around 2mb, but this was a godsend. TV system was down more than it was up, and we ended up unplugging the phone for good as they kept calling us to upgrade stuff.

We ended up all pretending to be the account holder (my housemate) in order to spread the stress of the literally daily calls out amongst all of us.

Sounds just like NTL used to be - Even in all their hopeless fkwittery, BT have never come within a light year of NTL's weapons Grade incompetance - not really surprising they went bust...
