This is the first year i've needed to renew our pet insurance - is it the same as every other type of insurance?

Ignore the renewal, phone up and threaten to leave etc until they reduce your price?

Or is what they send what you pay?

Generally found what they say goes, no haggling. Usually because the company is underwritten by another company so the people you speak to have no power to compromise!

They also know by changing companies you may lose out esp if any conditions been claimed for (new company will not cover for pre existing/ diagnosed conditions.)

Others may have had more joy though!

Never haggled, simply because as Becks says you have the pre-existing conditions issue.

We have just swithced insurers to cheaper ones on the animals with no claims mind..

Can anyone suggest a company that does a large discount for 4 cats, or a policy that covers multiple cats?

Its for two cats - both only a year old and no conditions at all, infact we've not claimed at all this year.

Currently with Petplan - and the cover seems good but the price hike is a bit off putting.

I haggled with Tesco pet insurance this year. All i took off the policy was getting back what I paid for the dogs and that saved me about £10 a month each.

For a phonecall it's got to be worth a try.

My neighbour haggled with his plastic surgeon, Although they intially suggested that the price was fixed at £3600 he offered them £2800 "and I am walking out right now to get a plane to Budapest". They took it.

I did suggest that a plastic surgeon was the one person I wouldn't play hardball with and to be frank I can't see the op has made a whole lot of diference to his eyebags/lids and he still has an odd healing scar with a small plaster on 6 weeks later. Perhaps there is a lesson in that! Perhaps the surgeon will get his £800 back when he has to have another op in a few years.

Have your cats been to vets for any treatments even if not claimed for, new ins co. will ask for this history aswell. If not then should be ok to swap if needed. Just ensure the cover is a decent one if you go for cheaper. Pet plan is what we class as gold standard.

Let us know if you successfully haggle with your current co. It's never worked for me but I can't swap due to claims I've made!

I am guessing there is only an admin fee to play with, after all the risk is the same for each cat.

Thanks Becks - No not been treated at all in the year we've had them.

Its the covered for life policy we have on them both as well, so the cover is pretty good. Just got a quote from Petplans own website to compare and its actually more expensive than my renewal.

Maybe I shouldn't rock the boat!

Is it worth self insuring?

Look at the fine print very closely. We have just had to shell out £750 for our Spanials Cruciate Ligamant operation as it was excluded in the smallest of small print on a tiny page.

In truth we have paid thousands only to find this. Not moaning our own fault at not doing enough research on all the medical terms but is a tad annoying.

AFAIK cats actions aren't the legal responsibility of the owner, or some other suchlike nonsense smile
