But why ask if you're afraid she'll say no? You have to know it's right and you don't appear to. My advice to you my friend is don't ask until you know she will say yes.

Given she has to wear said ring for the rest of her life+, I think it's wise to let her pick a ring that she likes.

A ring chosen by you will (or should) mean more than simply giving her a wad of cash and telling her to choose her own.

If you know her well enough, choosing one she'll like shouldn't be difficult.

So unless you have awful taste, choose a ring yourself beforehand and bring it along when you pop the question.

I did get the ring in advance but knew exactly what she wanted.

From my shopping around at the time, there were plenty of couples who were shopping for engagement rings together. It also reduces the risk of buying the wrong size / design.

I think it's acceptable. An alternative could be to propose with a diamond (but no ring) and have it fitted to a ring of her choice later.

I took my misses on a surprise visit to hatton gardens and proposed, then we got the ring together , sorted and as a bonus you get a much nicer ring than if you went to a normal jewellery shop in your local town
