I posted a rather expensive piece of medical equipment via special delivery recently, and during transit the casing was damaged. Being used in intensive care, the item was returned immediately to us for repairs, which we carried out at a cost to us of £181. As special delivery is supposed to insure items up to the value of £500, one would think that claiming this cost back would be fairly simple.

However, so far the only response we've had is that the only way they'll consider paying out for a claim such as this is if the damaged item and packaging are sent in to be 'assessed'. They aren't willing to accept photos taken of the damage to the packaging and item on delivery.

Now, I can understand that this request is made for a reason - presumably so that they can get quotes for repairs or offer to carry them out themselves. However, this piece of equipment was required urgently in the ITU, and we're the only people who can repair it, as the exclusive distributor within the UK. As such if their intention was indeed to assess the value of the repairs, they would have had to come straight to us anyway, which would have caused additional delays as they processed everything.

We haven't been able to elevate this to a level where they'll stop reading from a script yet, and nobody we can contact within the Post Office seems willing to aid us in doing so.

Knowing how quick you guys can be to bring up appropriate contact details, or the right people to contact, I was wondering if anyone could assist me in this?

Sorry for the long post

Can't help with the query, but the Post Office didn't damage your item....

Royal Mail did (if it was in transit as you say)

Whoops!

I think you'll just have to fight it out with RM (probably over a long period of time) or accept the costs yourselves.

I tend to find with big companies a letter from a solicitor tends to get things rolling very quickly

No need, just file a small claim.
