A Crappy Day. RIP Delta.

We have a dog that looks just like called max.
His back legs are shot too. I think its a breed thing. Takes him a couple of agonising looking minutes to get up from lying down.
However it didn't stop him proudly dumping his latest rabbit kill on our doorstep this morning, and until he stops looking like he's enjoying that part of his life there isn't anything that makes me want to take him for the 'long walk'.
condolences.

Yes, GSDs are known for dodgy hips. However it didn't stop him proudly dumping his latest rabbit kill on our doorstep this morning, and until he stops looking like he's enjoying that part of his life there isn't anything that makes me want to take him for the 'long walk'.

He never carried any weight, and only recently started with his hip. He was struggling to get up and get around, and was tripping himself up more and more frequently. He'd also worn his claws and fur right down on his rear offside.
We took him in for x-rays this morning, and the vet assured us it was irreversible and would only get worse. Although it didn't seem to be causing him any pain, we knew he was frustrated at not being able to get around properly.
He was still groggy from the x-ray anaesthetic when he was put to sleep, but we were both there holding him and talking to him right to the end. We're both absolutely devastated, and the retriever that's left is confused about what's going on, but it would have been selfish just to keep him going so we didn't feel bad.
Sorry to hear about Delta... I love Shepherds, but hips are their weak-point - well since the breed societies decided they should slope at the back, anyway
Still haven't got over my first dog dying young, 5 years ago, so I know how you feel... I have 3 more around my feet as I type and it's definitely the best therapy. Your lab will appreciate it too.
RIP Delta
