I've recently bough a number of bits of 'vintage' fishing kit on Ebay. One of the items was a reel (Abu 505) that arrived with a bent bit - I got it cheap, so just sourced, again through ebay, a replacement bit. I left neutral feedback and thought no more of it.

The seller today refunded my additional costs for the replacement bit and is also sending me replacement front cover that was slightly damaged by the same issue (during transit?) that damaged the first bit.

No prompting from me, just someone who is doing it right.

Very pleasantly surprised. There are a few larger companies that could learn from this.......

Might be worth adding a note on the feedback, certainly an email of thanks.

Nice to see that there are some decent sellest on fleebay.

So you left neutral feedback before giving the seller the chance to put things right? Or is there more to this story? On the face of it, it reads as though you would rather complain about the seller than complain to them, and have screwed the feedback rating of an Ebay seller who genuinely cares about giving good customer service. But I'm sure that isn't what you did.

I have had about six hundred ebay transactions over the past ten years or so. Buying: Only one had a minor problem ~ spot of mould on an old camera lens not in description. That camera was from the USA.

Over those years, the majority of buying and selling has been without problem and only one buyer tried it on ~ wanted a replacement for a perfect item apparently damaged in post ~ I offered a full refund on item return but he declined.

More recently, I bought a new MultiMeter which although it would switch on OK and the window display come up, it would not give any readings. When the seller sent me a 'please leave feedback' email, I replied saying the feedback delay was because I had a problem with the new item. A replacement was sent immediately and they did not ask for the faulty item to be returned. I left appropriate positive feedback as the replacement was faultless.

If one is sensible and carries out some basic and essential checks when buying on ebay ~ like inspecting and driving the car before bidding ~ problems should be few and far between. Having said that, I have bought two cars unseen on ebay after speaking to the owners on the phone. My gut reaction when speaking to folks has been 100% relaible so far be it positive or negative. Those bought unseen cars were around 1000 quid only but by speaking to the owners you can usually rely on that gut reaction. More expensive cars I would never bid on unseen.

It is possible to get good service but, it has become more difficult to do so in recent years.

I've generally had great experiences on ebay, but it is getting harder to find the good guys, and there are more idiots. I bought a gps radar detector - supposedly new, it clearly wasnt, parts missing, and it was faulty (rebooted its self every time you plugged it in). I returned it. Foolishly not recorded, and the seller says it never arrived. So I paid for the item, postage twice, and had nothing to show for it. EBay was useless in their support too.

Yep - I work away from home and had had the kit for more than a week before I tested to find the issue - I have followed up praising the guy's willingness to resolve - so no more to the story - In 7 years on ebay, it's the first non-positive feedback I've left.

I've read plenty of ebay 'nightmares' on PH, so thought it would appropriate to say that it does work for most......

So it's not all bad then.

Mostly ups for the majority of users, and some downs too to balance it out.

Really can not fathom why anyone, ever would return stuff without sending it recorded.
The seller could well be posting, "So, I sold something on eBay, buyer claims it doesn't work (worked fine here), so I agree to a return. He thens claims he sent it back but "forgot" to use recorded delivery. Obviously I have never received the product back but he is contacting eBay claiming I should refund anyway!"

Ebay will always (usually!) help if you can prove you sent it back. But they can't get refunds for people just on their word, I'm sure you're 100% honest but some of the people who use ebay are not as honest as you and might claim they sent something back without actually doing it.

I thought that was how it worked on ebay now (to be honest I dont use it much these days).. but if you leave bad or neutral feedback, if the seller does something to sort it out (as was the case here) you can go back and then add additional feedback to state that the seller sorted your gripe out.

Goes to show in this instance ebay's philosophy that 'People are generally good / honest' was proved right! thumbup... although i think ebay actually word it a bit better than I did.

If you try to leave Neutral or Negative feedback, eBay prompts you to try to sort the problem with the customer before leaving feedback. You have to ignore this prompt (and obviously eBay rules) to leave feedback.

I really hate the aholes - any buyer who leaves bad feedback before making any attempt to contact me.

Did/does it have fused leads/duff fuse, that's the favourite for no readings on any range.

Some/most sellers are very good, my feedback is 200+ (buying and selling), never had any problems with the people I have sold to and very few problems with people I have bought from, and in these problem occasions all has been rectified as it should.

However I have never really bought technology items, I believe that's when your more likely to have troubles.

Chris.

You can change feedback through the form.

I have noticed more and more that ebay is a buyers paradise.

Ive bought hundreds of things on ebay, and I think the only problem when buying was once I was buying some snails for my fish tank for £3 including postage. Never got them, no replys to emails from the seller.

And then once when selling a shirt I sent it but the package apparently opened in the post, so I refunded the money, was only about £5 anyway.

Never had any troubles on E-bay, apart from the high posting cost.

I once got a defect Xbox game, mailed to the sender for a return address and he just refunded it, without needing to send it back.

I just bought something that didn't arrive in the post, less than 20 pound, message to the seller and we agreed to wait for two weeks to see if it turned up, end of the 2 weeks he refunded the same day, no dispute procedure just friendly messages between us, great guy to deal with. So like the rest of life there are in fact more good guys on ebay than bad, just the bad ones get the publicity.
