Engagement ring sizing question

I'm going shopping for an engagement ring tomorrow. I've done a fair bit of reading up and I'm reasonably confident I'll find something my significant other will like. I've got a couple of questions though.

My problem is that because it's a little last minute (planned for ages but money and a good time to ask the question have both come together) I forgot to try and find out what size her finger is. I can't borrow one of her rings because to the best of my knowledge she doesn't have any - certainly none that she wears regularly - and rooting through her jewellery box now will give the game away.

Someone suggested waiting till she's deep asleep then using a piece of string to get a measurement, which is an option but doing that in the dark sounds a bit hit and miss. Can anyone come up with an alternative? I've only got 36 hours to get the size, so I suspect it'll have to be some sort of improvisation.

And is it difficult to get most rings resized if it all falls through and I have to best guess?



(And try and keep the 'ring size' jokes to a minimum please...)

If you can get a ring from her (nick it from her jewellery box, she won't notice, it will only be gone a few hours) that's a start. Even if she doesn't wear it regularly, she bought it so it must have fit once right? Take it to the jewellers and they will size it and sell you a ring accordingly. Just remember, if you are doing this last moment you probably won't be able to get it resized quickly - 3 or 4 days quoted is not unusual, even if you are in a rush, espescially if you buy it from a bigger chain jewellers. A smaller business might be able to aaccomodate a resizing easier. Either way, nick a ring of hers and hope they have something she will like and you can afford in her size.

Not sure if this is any help, but the only thing I can think of is do you know if she has ever tried on someone elses ring, that you could contact (mother?), and was it anywhere near the right size? Or some similar way to compare her ring finger to someone elses you could get measured? Just to get you in the right ball park.

I believe most rings can be resized to an extent, but as far as I am aware they can only be stretched, so would suggest possibly err'ing on the small side if it ends up being a bit of a guess. I may be wrong and happy to be corrected.

Another thought - if you are planning on buying a premade in stock type ring then I imagine a swap to a different size if required would be possible.

Hope it all goes well and you manage to sort it out. I recently proposed to my girlfriend and it is the best thing I have ever done.

My Dad is a jeweller and it is most important to get the resizing done properly otherwise its common for the stones to come loose.

It can easily be done in 24hrs if you go somewhere like the jewellery quarter in Birmingham but all the chains have to send them off - hence the delay.

Better to go too large than too small. When you propose you definitely want the ring to slide fully on to her finger (even if it's loose) and not get stuck at the first knuckle.

If you really aren't sure plump for an upper middle sized ring from Argos or similar then do a trip to the jewellers for the real ring when she says yes.

Engineer a situation where you get her to stick the relevant digit into some play-doh, make a cast and hey presto.

Take finger shopping and you can even see what the ring would look like on, paint said cast finger for better realism, use favorite nail varnish (hers not yours) etc…

On the morning of the purchase, discreetly wrap your thumb and finger around her ring finger and slide it off. Keep your hand in that position until you can show the jeweller.

That's what I did. I should never have told her the box cost more than the ring. She never realised.

I got my OH so drunk I thought i'd best put her in the recovery position by spiking her ginger beer with gin and then used a free ring size I got off a website.

Do you have an iphone? Tiffany has some fancy app that helps determine ring size and ring designs.

She'll want to make sure you spend enough!
