Squirrel Season?

What on earth is going on, everywhere I go at the moment I am seeing dead squirrels by the side of the road. Is there a huge abundance of them?

Actually, I nearly got one myself, it leapt into the road but I managed to swerve round him - had he ran he would have been a whole lot thinner than when he started.

Squirrels are very active at this time of year, collecting food to fatten up for winter and burying nuts/seeds etc for the colder months, subsequently they are running about more, crossing roads and paying less
attention, they're just pests and vermin anyway so not really an issue.

Yes, legally they are vermin BUT I still don't like to see them hurt/killed by the roads. And I most certainly don't want to run them over, it's just that I have in the last few days seen rather a lot of them freshly killed.

I actually think they are sweet and I do feed the two or three of them who inhabit my garden..

The grey squirrel is nothing more than a tree rat with a bushy tail.

It is not native to the UK and is gradually destroying our own red squirrel population by chasing them out of their habitat (greys are bigger and quite vicious) and spreading squirrel pox (seriously) which decimates the reds.

Hunt them / trap them / poison them at every opportunity!

Yes, theres hundreds of the fluffy rascals larking about in the wood at the bottom of the garden. I really enjoy seeing them run, the way their tails follow the arc of their body

Loads of fwuffy bunny wabbits about too, its cute critter central here, if only I had my air rifle.

Grey squirrels are just rats with good PR.

Horrible creatures: they raid birds' nests for eggs and young, and strip bark from trees.

I saw a pair of Black Squirrels in some nearby woodland this morning, most unusual and interesting

You have to get over the fact they look cute, if you like wildlife just look at the damage they do to native wildlife, red squirrels, nesting birds, trees etc, they are desructive tree rats, the only good grey is a dead grey, they taste pretty good too actually, you're right though if I'm killing them I want to do it with a headshot from my air rifle, so I know it's humane and quick, not half squashing it with my car.
