Looks like a Grass Snake. Probably harmless, doesn't look like an adder. I would have thought it would be going into hibernation or at least looking for somewhere to hibernate at this time of year. Leave it to it.

By the way, I am not a snake expert - I am just good with Google. (Meaning, I can type "British Snake" into it! biggrin)

Cool find by the way!

A grass snake.....5+ foot long? really? I thought they max'd out at about 2!

Where in the UK? Town/country? 5ft is huge, unusual but not impossible for a grass snake.

It can't be 5 feet long and a grass snake to boot. I suspect that with snake encounters being reasonably uncommon, the surprise can have an exaggerating effect. I'm not being disrespectful, but a five foot long UK indigenous snake would have me calling the Guinness Book of Records.

Female grass snakes can get up to 6ft+ in the right environment. Like I said unusual but not impossible.

There are some HUGE adders round the Pembrokeshire coast, found one getting on for 3ft about 10 years ago. Good job the dog was off hunting bunnies elsewhere. yikes

well, I did not get a tape out and measure it, just going on it being about 2 foot wide in that picture curled up.
