Just been reading this.

http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/Nine-things-buy-l...

In the last ten years we as a nation have become quite good at comparing prices of pretty much everything we buy from insurance to clothes and everything in the middle.

I personally make sure what ever I buy is the best deal I can find, it takes very little time, I might spend 10 minutes before I buy something online on average I'll save £50 each time. I only window shop these days and buy online and hate being caught with no petrol in areas I don't know.

I think people don't take prices at face value anymore back in the days before internet they did.

We are questioning much more and saving thousands

The sad thing is, everything is now about price and not about service. Retailers must despair when people go and take up their time asking questions, playing with demo kit only to then go and buy it cheap as chips online.

Value for money and price are very different things.

"When it comes to electrical goods, we waste £33.53 a year by failing to shop around"

Yep, I lost most of that that the other week by paying about £30 more than the best online price I could find for a dish washer from a local retailer who was happy to go through the features of several different models and let me collect from the shop rather than having to take half a day of work for delivery. I'll happily pay a bit more for decent service and the chance to have a look at stuff, but some shops were charging around £100 more for the same item which is taking the piss.

I agree its sad for retailers but it is all about price.

What does service actually translate to these days?

I went to my local shop bought X was quite expensive, bu a great person made me a cup of tea and said if I ever have any questions or need it replaced repaired.

I bought X off the net saved £100, if it goes wrong 10 minutes on an internet forum or if its broken, stick it in a prepaid bag and send it back and wait for replacement.

Again, I know this puts businessess out of busines but thats life, I didn't create the society we live in but I'm sorry but it is driven by cost.

Exactly.

I just bought a relatively expensive chain-saw. I know I could have saved £20-£30 buying it on-line, but I wanted to give my custom to the local chap, who I can call for advice, will sort out any issues, and also sharpen the chain for peanuts, since I bought it from him....

Support your local company I say, not the big boys.

Once those business go out of business we'll have to buy everything online, and personally I like to go and have a fiddle with a few varients of what I'm buying before I commit to it, which I won't be able to do if the business all close, hence I don't mind spending a little bit extra to buy locally.

What you're saying is that you know the cost of everything and the value of nothing....

On the flip side, I'm more than happy to read reviews from a number of people/sources online and then buy the best product at the cheapest price I can find, online. Rather than taking a trip into town (if you've ever been to Sittingbourne you'll know why people are eager to avoid it), and have my time wasted by a retailer talking up the features of whichever product he gets the most markup on.

I think buying online has its place but for the big ticket items I prefer to deal face to face, often if you go armed with an online price you can negotiate some sort of discount, and you then have the benefit of dealing with a local retailer. Any complex items that might need some quality backup I would go this route.
