What I mean is, can you summon the emergency services by email? Is there an equivalent of 999 for email?

If it's an emergency surely it would take longer to email?

Or do you mean sms, i.e. hidden behind the cupboard whilst the criminals are in the room?

Done, just sent a text to 999 asking for the Fire Brigade - apparently they're sending the Police instead. confused

Moss: Subject: Fire. Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to inform you of a fire that has broken out on the premises of 123 Cavendon Road... no, that's too formal.
[deletes text, starts again]
Moss: Fire - exclamation mark - fire - exclamation mark - help me - exclamation mark. 123 Cavendon Road. Looking forward to hearing from you. Yours truly, Maurice Moss.

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland are currently urging walkers and climbers to sign up for the new Emergency Text Services.
In the hills it can be that you don't have a strong enough signal to call but a text may get through.
to register all you do is, text register to 999 you will get a reply then follow the instructions you are sent. takes a couple of minutes

best not to wait til you are stuck half way up or down a hill before registering though.

yeshttp://www.emergencysms.org.uk/ It's been running for about a year now but it's still only a trial. Hopefully the RNID will persuade Ofcom to make it (and CapTel) legal requirements for telecom operators.

There is also 18000 for textphone users.

Not for 999 emergencies....but from my experience, not all 999 calls are.!! ie - "someone stole my snowman" from a couple of weeks ago.

But you can report crimes online.... http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/reptcr/reptcr-re...

Reason for question is there is a gadget that you can program to send an emergency email, it is a bit like a mini EPIRB. If you need the cavalry, emailing the emergency services would be better than emailing great aunt nellie.
