I used to have a a little lock knife that I bought in Spain for €5 ages ago. I used for everything, peeling apples, sharpening pencils, getting stones out of tyre treads and sometimes actually cutting things.

I lost it some time ago and really miss it. Anyone got any suggestions for a replacement. I did think about a Victorinox Swiss Army knife, but am I just paying for a name?

I don't need any gadgets on it, just a decent blade that can be easily sharpened and won't snap. Doesn't need to be particularly large or expensive either. Just a good old fashioned pocket knife.

Any suggestions?

Gerber. All my colleagues used them. Other than that, if you need a multi-tool, pick up a Leatherman.

I like these.

Cheap as chips, well, nearly and really good quality.
Wooden handle on most and they have a lock on them too.

Very good knives, I have one on my boat. The lock means that if a wooden headed copper finds it on you/in your car, you will need to prove you had a good reason for having it. You can take the metal clip off that locks it though.

I still have a scar from one of these - my brother brought me one back from a school trip to Switzerland and before I realized it had a lock I managed to snap it shut on my index finger joint down to the bone. I hid the wound from my parents until it got infected and nasty and they took me to the docs.

ETA - I still have the knife, 25 years on!!!

I had one of these until I lost it (grrr)

CRKT.

Flicks open one-handed and has a locking blade, which makes it very handy.

Must get another!

They were done Monday, also had about 6mm cut off too! My cuticles don't grow, if I have my nails painted in to the nail bed any further the paint will bleed terribly smile

Try one of these bad boys. I've used mine many times camping/hiking now and it's still as tight and sharp as it was new. I'd recommend it 100%.

I like that. But being a girl a blade just over one and a half metres long wouldn't fit in my handbag... wink
