My condolences.
Is it a reading that you would prefer, or have you addressed the idea of a ulogy (sp?)? Will be more personal in my opinion? I attended a funeral recently and the vicar gave us a beautiful memory of the deceased, we were upset of course, but it was nice to have a chuckle at the fond memories - if you understand what I mean?

yes There are some lovely poems out there (google will help), but at a recent funeral that I went to one of my relatives gave a superb collection of memories which we could all relate too. It also helped to lift the mood towards more of a celebration of what a good person they were, which I thought was entirely appropriate.

yes

The vicar at my Dads funeral actually went to school with my Dad and they grew up together for a while so had his own stories.

I couldn't read out a reading, but had my Dads best friend read out one I found online about being his first son.

Depends who the funeral is for/relation to you.

Condolences to you and yours, hardly the most pleasent of times for anybody.

When it comes to readings (I've had the misforune of doing readings for 8 funerals over the last three years) I've always with one exception gone more to the route of using personal anecdotes about the persons life, on the one occasion where a specific reading has been needed it was Remember Me written by David Harkins, which is a pleasent piece that celebrates the life that has gone by rather than mourning the loss.

condolences.

This was read at my Mother's funeral.

You can shed tears that I’ve gone
or you can smile because I’ve lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that I’ll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all I’ve left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see me
or you can be full of the love we shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember me and only that I’ve gone
or you can cherish my memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what I’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

It's not exactly the same, it's from here.

Thank you all SO SO much for you input. 'Remember Me' is beautiful and exactly the type of reading I had in mind. It really is very appropriate.

When my brother died a few years ago, I found the whole writing of his eulogy quite therapeutic and helped me so much with his funeral.

I went and read it all out the day before hand at the crematorium so I knew how it was going to feel standing there doing it, albeit with no one there.

So came the day, and I read out my 2 page heart felt reading. It was very hard to do it with out breaking down but I couldn't believe the reception it got and the spontaneous applause as well.

That moment will never leave me ever.

My condolences and good luck with your search.

At My Grandmas funeral:

Death is nothing at all

I have only slipped away into the next room

I am I and you are you

Whatever we were to each other

That we are still

Call me by my old familiar name

Speak to me in the easy way you always used

Put no difference into your tone

Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow

Laugh as we always laughed

At the little jokes we always enjoyed together

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was

Let it be spoken without effort

Without the ghost of a shadow in it

Life means all that it ever meant

It is the same as it ever was

There is absolute unbroken continuity

What is death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind

Because I am out of sight?

I am waiting for you for an interval

Somewhere very near

Just around the corner

All is well.

Nothing is past; nothing is lost

One brief moment and all will be as it was before

How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

I write lyrics/poems etc for a lot of people (best mate is a wedding photographer and I've done a lot of grooms speech's for her).

If you want me to write something more personal/intimate, just let me know mate and I'll see what I've got/what I can write.

Condolences to you chap.

Just knocked the below up, not sure if it's any good for you or not, but feel free to use whatever you want. I've gotta go out for the evening, but I'll carry on with it tonight/tomorrow and you can take your pick if you need to.

The day’s we spent together,
I’ll hold forever dear,
We laughed and joked, and sometimes cried,
But never did we fear.

For our time with one another,
Was always filled with love,
I’ll carry on our private jokes,
You just laugh from up above.

When you came into my distant past,
I didn’t know it then,
But you filled a hole inside of me,
That won’t need to be filled again.

But there’s words I never spoke to you,
Some things were just too tough,
But you’ve left me a million memories,
And that’s more than enough.

Of late I've been really starting to dislike PH due to the sheer amount of trolling and chav-crap - but it's stuff like this that makes me think again and keep coming back.

Absolutely brilliant. Hats off to you sir.

Sorry to hear of your loss. frown

My aunt had this printed for everyone at my grandmother's wake. I don't usually get caught up in the emotion of funerals and death but this seriously brought a tear to my eye.

poem said:
God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you
and whispered,
"Come to Me"

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best

At a recent In Laws funeral, one of the family read out alist of words which everyone would agree were character traits of the deceased. The first letter of each group spelled out his name. Some of them were poignant, some touching, some wistful and some funny.

I thought it was a lovely tribute to the old chap and gave everyone an insight into his character for those who had not known him all his life.

Also one of his sons spoke about his dad and his life. He gave us a history of his upbringing, working life, sporting life and life as a retired grandfather. It was beautiful and at times quite funny but still brought tears to my eyes.
