Of garbage and effluent.
No nice way to say it but east London stinks. How does this impress visitors? I'm assuming the rest of London has a similar pong problem.
Is this how all major cities are?
Thank god I live way outside.

The stench in east London might have something to do with the giant Beckton sewage works.

In most European cities you'll find that the 'poor areas' are in the east.

That's because the prevailing wind is from the west...

I used to live in Morden, SW London and amazingly it mostly smelt of smog as per London in general, occasionally some of the local kids would set fire to something and there'd be the smell of fire in the air (it's a lovely area, honest)

Smells lovely here in Camberwell, as long as you like crack cocaine, alocohol, african restaurants, coconut oil, tyre smoke and gunpowder.

I'm all for building a 12 foot, Berlin style, wall around London - just inside the M25. London could have its parliament in Westminster and we could have our parliament in Oxford, or Cheltenham.

Hunting with dogs would be illegal in London, and we could have a ciggie in a pub in hampshire. What's not to like? biggrin

I last went to London some years ago, and can't say I noticed the smell, but I'll take your word for it, and think myself lucky to live about a mile from the Irish Sea, where on a good day I can stand on a sand dune and look out to Anglesea on one side and the lake district on the other and New Brighton and liverpool just to the south and Blackpool tower and the big one to the north, and breath in the fresh salty air coming from the Isle of Mann just out of the distance. Might take the Dog tomorrow when I get home from work.

Surely its the drains due to lack of rain? Any extended dry period and London stinks of ass.

I haven't ever been to London, but can anyone tell me if it smells worse than Port Talbot?

Don't forget Camberwell also has Carravagio, possibly one of the best independent restaurants in the world.

It's Deptford and Lewisham that smell like st, I'm sure they'll sort out Stratford before the Games.

yes I jest, I like it here, but for a lot of people it takes some serious getting used to, especially at night biggrin

Understatement of the millennium, generally down the Peckham Road (Peckham end) outside the 24hr off license, and hookers, really ugly flea eaten toothless ones.

Yes that part of london smells.

Anyway I'm off down the shop to score... laters wink

There's a horrible stench around where the A406 meets the A13. Nasty, like an open sewer. Haven't noticed it before, but over the past week or so, it's been humming quite a bit... 'orrible.
