Hi folks,

as i was reading a few threads i noticed there was one on sick leave and folk taking the piss, etc work-shy\hangovers etc etc.

I saw a few folk mentioning they had Cronhs\Colitis, and i just wondered how many we had here with the disease.

I have been diagnosed for about 6 years but had it since i was about 14, mine is just more needing the loo suddenly, or having days where you can't be less than about 5 feet from a loo, my work is sort of understanding, but i try to not be off as much as i can, always letting them know what is happening if i am at docs, or have to go to hospital, or if i am in a state where i can't drive as i will crap myself with no warning.

I am on the 'happy pills' (cortico steroids) atm, which make it like i dont have a problem, apart from the 'fun' side effects, mainly weigfht gain..put on 2kg grr

However i have found i take about an average of 10-12 days a year with it, whuich i hate to do as people see it as 'nowt wrong with you' to look at, when infact you are in agony in your guts or spend most of the work day on the porcelin bowl! but at least you are in the office, whcih i think my boss appreciates as he knows i dont take the piss.

Anyway, hope all are well, oh and any non crohn's types may be forewarned, this thread may discuss the loo...a lot smile

Just been scoped...colitis of a fairly spectacular kind and too bad for me to have a barium x ray. No treatment yet cos I'm waiting to see a consultant.

My sister has colitis (as do a few of my friends). Hers flared up badly at the end of last year/beginning of this year, and she was on max dose of everything (steroids etc.) with no luck.

She tried this bizarre diet she found on the internet, and now just a few months later, she's almost entirely drug free and symptom free.

It is weird - the diet seems to exclude a lot of food types (carbs, processed sugars, yeast, wheat etc.) and we were all sceptical thinking it was just another internet rip off, but it has really worked.

If you're interested let me know and I'll dig out the details.

Cheers for that, will give it a read at tea break.

TBH, my cronhs isn't too bad, its just an inconvinience, and basic steroid course can help (such as just now) but avoiding some foods can help too, such as a lot of cream or very strong coffee, but i think stress is a big factor combined with these things, though doctors are adamant stress makes no difference, but all sufferers i know disagree haha.

I am worried when the steroids wear off my usual self wil reappear being nervous and not so outgoing, as i dont want my GF to get fed up of me frown

I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in May 2005 after a couple of major flare ups (no idea what they were at the time!). I nearly had the operation to remove part of my bowel but managed to recover without having to go under the knife... phew.

I was on steroids in the beginning and then my condition was managed solely by Azathioprine (sp?) for a few years. In 2009 I decided that I didn't want to be on medication for the rest of my life so just stopped taking it. Probably a silly thing to do but everything worked out fine and I'm pretty much symptom free today. There are a few foods that will give me a bit of a sore stomach and trip to the bathroom so I try to avoid them as much as possible. Strangley, the main culprit seems to be reg grapes and the juice of any purple/red fruit.

Well i am about to be off steroids in 2 weeks, on 10mg a day from monday, and i hope the settled tummy stays for a bit as i would hate for it to bounce back.

I have found some foods give me jip, oddly chewing gum (minty) can do it??!! or too many olives also can give issues bizarrley.

Hehe no worries, it's a natural assumption given this is PH !

My sister has a blog (although she hasn't updated it for a while) which followed her progress on the SCD diet; there are a few recipes, updates on how her drugs reduced etc. etc.

Hope it helps smile

I have had crohns since 2001 at the age of 12 and have never had a problem until may last year. The only medication i was on was the lowest dose of pentasa just in case.
I had a flare up in may 2010 and was put on full dose steriods for a good few months and then tried azathioprine which didn't work. I then got sepsis in october then again in november and again in december. I was weaned off the steriods and put on methotrexate whilst being on amoxicillin and then switched to pennicillin to cover me from getting sepsis again whilst on the methotrexate as it reduces your ability to fight infection. This sorted my crohns out and started to feel 'normal' again until 5 weeks ago I got C.Diff due to being on the antibiotics for so long so am now on another course of antibiotics for that. I have also developed a major case of piles or a fistula since getting c.diff and am waiting for an MRI this week to see what to do with regards to that as I'm walking like john wayne at the moment.

On the upside I can eat pretty much what I want although some things give me a slight upset stomach but nothing that bothers me enough to stop me eating it. So if anyone wants any advice etc I'm happy to help.

Got sick in dec 2007 after going on holiday to Egypt, apart from 2 weeks of slight remission i never did get over that flare up. Couldn't work whilst they tried all the different drug therapies so lost my job which really sucked. The same day i lost my job i was told the Infliximab hadn't worked and the only option i had left was a total colectomy. Was out of work for 14 months but stupidly didn't sign on for god only knows what reason (pride?). Since i've been back at work (8 months) i've only had 1 day off (flu).

I think i've posted about this before but i found the attitude of some people very hard to take, friends, colleagues, even family think you're 'faking it'. Some bright spark said to me "i had a tummy bug on holiday once, i just took 2 imodium and i was fine, have you tried taking imodium?"

oh, and everyone wants to talk to you about their defacatory difficulties now, mates, relatives, co-workers, they all want to tell you the exact size/shape/consistency/odour/pain etc
