So who has had them? Fookin painfull. Suffered many years on and off.
These days i can put up with the pain most the time , (pethidene is awesome).
How common are they? Seems many suffer with them.##Hints and tips, apart from drinking gallons of water?
My best solution is drinking loads of cheap lager, Tesco's value pish, low alohol content but makes you peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Anyone got a better answer?

Surely beer is only going to make them worse? It dehydrates you.
Drink water!
Really?Drink water!
I thought that most beer had such a low alcohol content compared to the water content that that was a myth..?
I'm pretty sure there would need to be a lot more water content in beer for it to balance the diuretic effect of the alcohol.
Less water in your body means the salts and minerals that constitute kidney stones will be concentrated and the problem will persist.
Drinking lots of water will also make you pee but your body will be properly hydrated. I suggest you try that instead, if you ever want rid of them.

Absolute bar stewards them kidney stones. FFS though cut out the alcohol, you are only going to make things worse! (Well, unless you are really unlucky like me... read on...)
I had a 7mm one and lots of small ones in both kidneys 2 years ago. After a month of on-off agony I passed the 7mm one as nature intended. Worst pain I have ever had, and I wept loudly and openly in front of a whole ward such was the pain. Suddenly, relief and an urge to go to the loo. A further 5 agonising minutes later and it was out. Along with a lot of blood. Ever since, I would infrequently pass a bit of grit that would be more of an annoyance than a pain, but as a result I often get UTIs.
Went into hospital for an ultrasound for gallstones 3 weeks ago (which it turns out I do have) and in the process they found that in the last two years, two more large kidney stones have formed in each kidney - 8mm each! This is despite cutting the booze out altogether and adhering to a strict 3 litres of water / squash a day diet. They aren't giving me any grief yet, but the fact they are there, waiting, stresses the hell out of me.
As a result of the pills I've downed as a result of all this, I gave myself stomach ulcers and gastritis too.
I blame it all on the f
king kidney stones. Who'd have thought something so small could cause you so many problems?
For the record: kidney stones are the worst pain I've ever had but gall stones, should you ever be unlucky enough to get those too, run them a close second when they are at their worst.
TIPS I have found that work for me:
1. Look out for an over-the-counter drug called Buscopan. See http://www.stomachcramps.co.uk/buscopan-cramps.htm... It's marketed at IBS sufferers but I found it also helps with the spasming you get from a kidney stone or gall stone attack. It is NOT a painkiller, it is an anti-spasmodic I take it in conjunction with my painkiller.
2. At the first sign of the attack coming on, neck the above plus your painkillers of choice. At first you'll be a bit of a hypochondriac and think every minor back twinge is something to be worried about, but in time, you'll know the signs.
3. Run yourself a boiling hot bath, far hotter than you'd usually have and as hot as you can tolerate. Experiment with positions to find the one that offers the most relief, which will obviously depend on how far the stone has progressed and what side its on. Most usually, lying flat slightly rolled onto the 'good' side works for me.
4. Since you'll be sweating from the heat of the bath it's important to replace the fluid quickly so take a pint of water/juice with you.
5. Watch out for symptoms of other things. Taking such strong medication can (as in my case) lead to other things further down the road. If you're vigilant you can nip it in the bud before they cause you significant grief.

One thing missed out here is what causes them.
Ask any doctor and you will get the same response (as with prostatitis or prostate stones)... the cause is unknown or they cannot give a decisive answer.
I was in Cuba recently and went down with the old bladder prostate kidney pain. They work on 'preventative' medicine there (little wonder in spite of dreadful poverty, they have the second best health service in the world). I'm still waiting for an hosp. app whereas if I had had 2 more days in Cuba I would have had the ultrasound scan there and then! Anyway, that's an aside.
How often did I pee? I was asked in Cuba by the doctor.
When I needed to I said.
Not good. Pee 'when you can' to keep the kidneys clean.
This makes sense when you think about how it all works.
Here is an interesting piece to read about the same. (ignore the blood pressure heading, that's an advert!)

I've had kidney stones. Complete misery is all I can say about it really!! I first realised something was wrong when one Saturday morning I got up out of bed and I couldn't wee, I just managed a steady drip. This wasn't nice! You know what it's like when you're bursting, well it was like an extreme version of that but lasted for 10 minutes each time. My body was trying to get rid, but hardly anything came out and my body would start to shake quite a lot (luckily I could only drip, or I've have peed everywhere
) and my muscles would start to cramp up.
I went to an open surgery morning and the triage nurse suspected it was an STI (not a Subaru!), which I knew it wouldn't be as I was in a monogamous relationship. I gave a wee sample (took some time!!) and they dipped an indicator paper of some sort in there and they confirmed I was 'clean'. I was then sent through to the Dr who proceeded to ram her finger up my arse (without even buying me a drink first!) to check my prostate. All seemed ok there but she said it felt slightly enlarged, so was put on a course of tablets for a month.
Not being able to wee was complete misery and made me not want to drink anything as I was scared of having to pee, it wasn't a nice experience. I also found out that the other 'fluid' I could eject from my body was affected in that the pain I experienced during this was by far more painful than anything I'd ever experienced before. I can tolerate pain, but this was something much worse (but it made showering much quicker!). During the few weeks I was on the tablets, I noticed a sharp stabbing pain in my lower regions, riding a bicycle would have been impossible as the stabbing pain seemed to come from the gooch area. This pain seemed to travel a little day by day and actually got closer and closer to the old boy and I had a horrible feeling that I had some kind of blockage that was forcing its way out. The stabbing feeling got closer and closer to its exit point from my body that when I realised it had moved so far, I knew I'd be able to see it, so had a peer down the japs eye and I could see something lodged in there. I was obviously slightly scared as I had no idea what it was, all I could see was that there was a dark coloured blockage....do I stuck the non-pointy end of a needle down there to see if I could 'coax' it out. As soon as the pin touched, I knew what it was, the blockage was solid even though from what I could see of it (it was a bit over 1/2cm away from the end), it looked like it may have been soft, but the penny dropped as to what it was. For the first time in my life I felt a little ashamed and refused to show my girlfriend despite her eagerness to have a look!
We looked at the options, and to be quite blunt about it, we knew that I'd treat my cock with more care and respect that somebody down at the hospital, so decided on doing some home surgery. From the bathroom cabinet I got out a prized pair of Ruby and Millie tweezers (we'd been through quite a bit of home surgery together, normally just the removal of splinters etc and the occasional taming of the mono brow), so I apologised to them in advance as they were just about to go on a voyage in to my old fella.
I jammed the tweezers down my cock hole and managed to get a grip of the stone. You know when you have a bottle of wine and sometimes the cork is a little stubborn so you wedge the bottle between your legs to brace it so you can pull harder with the corkscrew. Well this is very similar to the position I resumed on the stairs for the next 15 minutes. After a lot of bad language, shouting and very watery eyes, I got the bugger out.
It was a hard brown lump, about 6mm across, but a slightly irregular shape. I guess it almost looked like a small chunk of brown sugar as it was quite crystally looking and razor sharp in places. If you're on a health kick and wanting to stop adding sugar to your coffee, just think about this last statement!
I had my appointment at the Dr's a couple of days later and took the stone with me. They asked how things were, so I told them it wasn't a prostate problem, it was a kidney stone. They asked why I thought that, so I showed them what my cock had coughed up. They were surprised I was able to pass a stone of that size so I told them about the tweezers.
I did have a second stone follow shortly after. This passed through my body fine this time, I could still wee. The only difference was that this time the pain in my kidney was agonising...not as bad as getting a razor sharp stone out of your cock, but bloody nasty all the same. This pain floored me, so ended up back at the Dr's, so was sent off for cat scan. This was pretty much the end of my ordeal really.
The urologist explained in basic terms why people get stones. He did say that they don't know why some people are more prone to them than others, but likened a stone to a builders cup of tea. Imagine you have a cup of tea. You stir in one sugar, it dissolves fine. You stir in a second, it also dissolves fine, you add a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth...and you'll now see that there isn't enough tea to dissolve all the sugar with and you're left with gritty bits in the mug. This is what happens to the kidneys if you don't drink enough. All the things in there that you are trying to flush away can't be washed away which is why it's so important to drink plenty of fluids (water!!). He also said it would be a good idea for me to steer clear from a list of things, but I remember that cashew nuts and strawberries were on there. I still eat these things and have not had a problem. It is very rare to see me without a bottle of water with me now though as I used to go a whole day without drinking. Never again.

it made me cinge and giggle at the same time...boy you're a brave mansticking tweezers down the old todger!..my eyes are still watering. Once saw a guy use a guitar string with some floss at the important lengths to get relief due to STD...
I've suffered the old stones but they broke up! Christ the pain was shocking!

auto pilot I laugh and cringe at your story, but I am truly amazed that a stone even got to your bladder without you feeling anything? Iv had 5 stones over the last 12months all around the 6mm mark at they totally blocked my uretha (tube between kidney and bladder) and f
k me that's painful! I remember I had Paracetamol, ibuprofen, Tremadol and morphene and despite being in another world I could still feel the pain!
having to have the hospital prize them out through your dick though is fine as your asleep, the problem is after which I can only liken to pissing lava with molten razor blades in! in fact I even had to resort to peeing like a girl until it calmed down!
to anyone getting aches from they kidneys, get it checked and blasted before it starts moving! then find out why you are getting them, most are protein but other types are around, mine are uric acid stones so a simple tablet sorts me out.

JonyTVR, I'm also rather baffled as to how I knew absolutely nothing about a 6mm stone in my kidney to be honest! I felt absolutely nothing and was living blissfully ignorant of anything being wrong until the moment I stopped being able to wee! Stone number two however was a different beast altogether. I knew that one was there as in a 45 minute window I went from waking up with a dull ache in my kidney to being curled up in a ball and not being able to move. An hour later I'd been seen by a Dr who confirmed it was probably a stone (The same Dr who* violated me at my previous appointment and put me on a drug to treat a prostate issue!).
This stone didn't seem to block anything, I could still wee ok, but it did burn for some reason. I'd almost forgotten about the stone and it wasn't until I was on a snowboarding trip that it made its appearance. I was outside the toilet block at the top of the Glacier at Des Alpes (they decided to lock the loos one afternoon) making some yellow snow, and I felt that familiar feeling that something was trying to make a bid for freedom. The only way I can describe this feeling is like when you're cleaning the car and turn the hose on and from time to time, air in the pipe make a sort of 'rattling' whilst it clears. Well that what it has felt like each time I've passed a stone, so on this occasion I was making yellow snow, had the weird rattle sensation and out it came of it's own accord.
I've had two stones, both very different in characteristics to the devastation they caused. The small one crippled me with kidney pain. The large one caused no pain, I just couldn't pee or jizz for a month
I can only really describe the whole experience as complete misery, it's really not a pleasant thing so am pleased that tablets have sorted you out. Although asleep at the time, your removal process doesn't sound so nice!

I'd feel awful if anybody thought I'd been arse fingered by Tom Baker.
Glad i'm not alone in this. Biggest stone that i passed intact was maybe 4mm. Nearly passed out.
I must be a wimp reading some other stories, (i will never see tweezers the same way), the grit burns bad enough.
Scan on Monday so hopefully they will spot it and give me the ultrasound treatment.
Have had quite a few stones over the years and only one was spotted on x-ray and blasted so not holding up too much hope.
