Anybody used a private neurologist consultant?

My wife is undergoing a neurological problem of the Central Nervous System and due to the time it is taking by the NHS we both feel it would be a lot quicker to go down the private route. Problem is how do you know which consultant to pick from the lists that appear on the various private health providers websites?

So, has anybody on here got any pointers as to how to find out how good a particular consultant is - do they have a rating system, or similar - that we can at least look at to help guide our decision?

I can ask their secretaries or hospital of course but thats not really independent and we want to get it right.

If anybody has gone down this route and can make a particular recommendation in the north of england that would help too. Thanks.

Probably worth googling the specific condition, and seeing if there is someone who specialises in that. Links to research, papers, articles etc they may have published might be a good hint.
