Contact lenses.

I am slowly coming to the realisation that I am going to have to either wear glasses full time or go to contact lenses. I have avoided the latter until now because I perceive them as a faff, but wearing glasses full time will be a nuisance.
So, can anyone recommend where is best for them at the moment? Is Specsavers worth a try?
Also, are daily disposables the way to go?
They certainly are for me, I made the move a couple of months ago. I was amazed how little they hurt and how easy they were to get used to, having tried gas permeables many years ago.
I'm sure Specsavers or anywhere high street is fine for the initial consultation, I went to Boots. I believe you can save a lot buying online once you've found a type that suits and there was a thread to that effect a few days ago. I just bought some more from contactlenses.co.uk.

The optician I spoke to today said £35 per month. However, the site you mention has them from £13... I've been wearing dailies now (Focus Dailies) for ten years with no problems. Think it used to take about 30 minutes to put lenses in when I first started wearing them for fear of touching my eye! Now it's a ten second job with no irritation.
I order mine from Lensbase, cheaper than from the high street, decent turnaround time and can pay by Paypal (get cashback too). Think Boots and Specsavers offer a free trial for a week or so if you go in for an appointment and say you are looking at going for contacts.

This bothers me a bit too to be honest. I am not keen on the idea of putting my finger in my eyes, but then I am guessing most people feel the same way at first.I recently changed to contacts after getting caught out in public too often not being able to read things. I am long sighted & don't really need glasses at all, just for reading, which is why I kept getting caught out, just didn't see myself as a glasses wearer.
What a change it has made, having contacts is so liberating. I have vari focus ones even though I don't need the distance part. This is so that I can leave them in all day, rather than just when I need to read, & I can't recommend them enough.
I did go to a "proper" well established optician though, not a High St chain, & whilst the service I got was first class, they are a little expensive @ £32 per month, so after the first year is up I will probably change to a less expensive supplier.

In respect of "proper" opticians, I have used them before for glasses and found that Specsavers usually does a better job. I have had to return glasses to "proper" places and never once to Specsavers.

Yes, it's very difficult at first as you have a very strong natural aversion to anything touching your eyeball but you do get used to it. I had to persevere for a few days but now I just get in there & fish them out. If I sleep in them (by accident) they can be quite sticky but now I just dive in & peel them off my eyeball.I use monthly disposables as I have a fairly high degree of astigmatism & I think they come to around £140 for a year's supply, plus a few bottles of cleaner.
I've used montly disposables for about 8 years now.
I see the very same chap in Specsavers twice a year for a free checkup, the service is fine. My lenses are ready for me to collect each time and its just £24 every 3 months.
I've had zero trouble with them, I'm lucky enough to be able to get away with the most 'basic' with no problems (higher permeability lenses are dearer). Never had a problem, wear them probably 6 days out of 7.
Its as intuitive as brushing my teeth each morning, takes seconds.
I dont even think I'd consider laser surgery simply because lenses are so easy for me, and not at all expensive.

Just a heads up for people who use Boots for their lenses, I had a result at the weekend, Went in for some spare glasses and found an offer of buy designer frames and get designer sunglasses for £60 as I had my contact lenses supplied by them I get another £50 off so I managed to get a £200 pair of Ray ban sunglasses for £10 ! Made my sunday as I'd just scratched my Oakleys.
