Hi,

Had my first class on Monday after 2 years out of Chinese Kickboxing. After some pretty lightweight sit-up/press-up sessions my body is still aching. Any advice on how to recover quickly and tips on accelerating getting fitness?

Also, what's your opinion on Chinese kickboxing vs Muay Thai/Krav/Taekwondo? I only go for fitness, to defend myself against some looters/drunkards/the wife. Oh and I enjoy it.

Cheers

Just keep going. Your fitness will return quicker than you think.

I'd say go to whichever you enjoy most/is most convenient and you'll be more likely to stick it.

What do you class as lightweight sit ups and press ups? 10, 20 50? If you haven't trained for 2 years you are likely to ache to begin with regardless of the amount.

How often will you be training? Your body will adapt and you should be finding it easier within a couple of weeks.

Thanks for responses, 90 sit ups but with breaks, I'm going to attempt twice a week and keep it up and hopefully I'll start finding it easier in a few weeks. Flexibility is going to be difficult too, no pain no gain and all that

Just keep at it. Your body will adapt/improve. Just get lots of rest and stop beating the wife. wink

Are you doing san da, san shou or wu shu kwan?

You've stumped me there. I'm not sure what flavour it is but I would like to find out. It's always just been labelled Chinese Kickboxing with NWCKB.

What are the instructor/instructors like? I'm sure they won't expect you to go straight back in at the deep end, and that it will take time for you to get back up to speed.

For such an amazing, famous guy, I'm shocked I haven't heard of him biggrin

I've been doing some reading up about him on the NWCKB website, and he hasn't competed for many years (think he's about 50 now) so he won't be in the limelight as much i shouldn't imagine. He has been the England team coach for 13 years, had a regular column in M.A.I magazine. He must be pretty good if he's a 4th Degree Black Sash in Lau Gar Kung Fu and a 7th Degree Black Belt in Kickboxing. Had a look at some videos on you tube, he still looks pretty sharp!

Is it wise to openly rubbish someone when you don't hide your identity? I recall you posting on another thread that you didn't mind revealing your identity as you never posted anything "interesting". smile

Cheers for the feedback. Had 2nd Class on Saturday, still hurting but the fitness is getting easier. The NWCKB head you only really see at the gradings or the techniques days. I have one of the other instructors who does a great job. Another session tonight and definitely feeling the benefits.

I'd definitely recommend Chinese Kickboxing. You feel the pain but in a strange way it's a good pain.

Good choice smile I have a black belt in kickboxing and a black sash in Lau Gar Kung Fu... Although both from many years ago now.

I don't know whether the chinese kickboxing is any different/better/worse than any other style of kickboxing, but while I enjoyed the Kung Fu more at the time, I'd be more likely to go back to kickboxing now for fitness.
