Clinical depression.

Don't know who else to ask for advice so I thought I would ask PH.
Fairly long term girlfriend got accepted for University course in the USA. She knew it was going to be tough but she had been away from home for a long time before and thought she could handle it with regular contact and trips back in summer and winter etc.
She went over, found a nice apartment in a nice area she confessed that she was really homesick and missed me and her family, we would talk on the phone and she was very reluctant to end the conversation, often crying. About a week into the course it became apparent it wasn't for her, she had a panic attack and called her dad. He called the emergency services and she got taken to hospital and put on medication. She was very depressed believing that she was a failure and a let down and it was decided it was best if she came back home and got her self sorted out. She didn't want to come home but she didn't want to stay either. Talking to her became very hard work, she would snap and get angry and generally only provide one word answers. She came home and is staying at her dads but neglected to tell me this. I have had contact with her dad which is how I know, she is going to see the doctor. She doesn't want to see any of her family or me and if any visitors come to her house she goes to her room. I got an email from her saying she needed to be alone, which is fair enough. She is on drugs at the moment and according to her dad she feels insulated from the world and she is happy taking them. I have known this girl for about 8 years and she has had a few wobbles but she is normally a friendly outgoing motivated person and I really care about her.
I know its some kind of depression. I want to help but I don't know how to. I don't know if i should be ringing her dad or her everyday to see how she is so that she is aware that I care or if I should let her talk to me in her own time. I dont know if I should send her emails about my day etc etc, not expecting a reply but keeping her in the loop if she wants to be. I don't know how depression works, I'm worried that if I call her dad too often she will think Im conspiring behind her back.
