I am currently injured so running on a treadmill is out of the question but I can walk fine. I am currently doing a hill workout at 6kmh for 60 mins. This is includes walking with an incline of at least 3 which then has intervals of 6, 7.5 and 8.5. Is this a good exercise to loose weight and get fitter. I am not massive but a bit podgy. From doing 60 mins of this you do 6km and climb around 200 meters. My heart rate seems to range from 120 to 140, so in the fat zone. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

You will burn cals but you won't get any fitter I'm afraid.Let your injury heal and get back to running.

Eh?

Surely any regular exercise that allows you to maintain an elevated heart rate for an extended period of time will get you fitter by definition?

Could you explain that a bit?

Fitter than what?

Assuming the OP means he used to run on a treadmill, now he's walking. If he ran for longer/harder than he walks he's not going to get fitter is he?

The OP is bang on his basic fitness heartrate zone but if he's used to running ...

I havent run for about 6 months and was never a massive runner. I just want to loose a bit of wait and get a bit fitter during the injury which will be for a while yet. Is the hill program a good thing to do for walking on a treadmill?

As long as you keep your heartrate roughly where it is at the moment you'll be fine.Depends on your injury whether to do much of an inline on the 'mill. They're

not particularly good for calves anyway (treadmill is sprung so stretches them)or hamstrings(you use them differently running on a treadmill) but other than that

a hill program should be OK.

no, it might not get you fitter, but it might maintain the current level of the fitness the OP is at. if this is more than he is used to it will get him fitter. if it's less than he's used to it won't.

for example, i run about 35-40 miles a week. if i cut that down to 20 miles a week at the same intensity i'm still doing regular exercise but i won't get any fitter
