wisdom tooth out?
Discussion
my final wisdom tooth (bottom right) started cutting through about a year ago and it's almost out, however it's at an angle slightly backwards, the last half of it is still covered by gum. The last two days it's been really painful so I'm unsure if it's still cutting through or if it's fully erupted and this pain is a symptom of that. Since waking this morning I've been unable to open my mouth more than an inch, barely enough to fit a sandwich in. It doesn't actually seem to be the tooth causing any pain, I can touch it and it feels solid and it doesn't hurt, it's the gum around the sides and the back and my actual jaw that hurts. Is it going to need pulling out and how much does that usually cost (not being on the NHS and having to pay full whack)
An xray will tell you if it needs to come out, go see your dentist, the xray will show where the tooth is and where the roots are, I just had one of mine out, it was ok, no root problems so it was a streight forward extraction.
My total bill was £205 at my local private dental practice, this price included the xray, inspection, 2 cleaning sessions and tooth out.
Didnt get a breakdown of the cost but I think £100 would cover it.

I had mine out a year or so ago, impacted or something, done on the NHS though. Why can you not get it done on the NHS?
My usual NHS dentist didn't do it, I went to hospital?
Also, she mentioned "general anaesthetic right?"
"erm no thanks, local for me"
She thought I was nuts
It started hurting like hell at one point, she asked if I was okay, I just told her to hurry up please.

I've just got back from the 'emergency' dentist, £17 to be told what I basically knew already; my wisdom tooth isn't fully erupted and I have pericoronitis. Told me to clean it regularly (which I already have been), gargle with salt water and take painkillers. If it persists they'll refer me to have it removed. I was kind of hoping the least they'd do is make an incision in the gum covering the remainder of the tooth.

That really wouldn't have done much, if anything at all (in most cases). Also, you would normally need to have two episodes of pericoronitis requiring antibiotics before you would be referred for the extraction (following the guidelines).

You really think £17 is expensive?
it was when I was only in there for 2minutes! She looked at it and just went "yeah it's.. Blah blah blah". She didn't think it was going to come out any more and said the gum probably wouldn't heal leaving the small flap so this will probably happen again. sinizter: should I have been given antibiotics for it now?

The price is what the NHS has decided it is going to be. I will refrain from commenting further on it.sinizter: should I have been given antibiotics for it now?
Just try to consider that for every person that took 2 minutes to diagnose, there may be one who takes 30+ minutes to deal with. The cost to the patient and the remuneration to the practice/dentist is the same regardless of how long it takes.
Antibiotics - Does depend on the situation, not something I can say yes/no without seeing you. If it wasn't improving and was affecting you quite badly, I might have been inclined to give you antibiotics. If it was on the mend, I would tend to leave it. It does depend on what can be seen, how long it's been a problem and the person.

I understand what you mean about the cost, it hadn't crossed my mind that these were private dentists as it was a NHS health centre I went to.
this pericoronitis thing I've suffered before with two other wisdom teeth but this one is a different kind of pain to just sore gums, it feels like the root of the tooth is pressing the nerve sending a pain down my jaw

How long after having a wisdom tooth out should it take for the hole to close up? I had one taken out about 8 weeks ago and still have a massive hole in my gum.
The gum should form over in about a weeks time, the actual hole where the tooth used to be can take a long time to close up.sinizter said:

Are you saying that I shouldn't be able to feel the hole in my gum as the gum should have closed over the top of it? I'm having to irrigate it daily and it's annoying me

The gum would form over whatever shape the bone is ... So the hole would still be there, and you would be able to feel it. It's just not an open wound any more, like it would have been when the tooth was just taken out.
I had one of mine out a few years ago. Private dentist. Sat down, they numbed it (same stuff they use for fillings), then basically just cracked the thing in half with what looked like a small hydraulic nut splitter. Took the two bits out, stitched it up, and away I went. In and out in 10 minutes.
Bled like a b
h for a day, then the big hole in my gum which collected food and stank like nothing else I've smelt. Ended up digging stuff out the hole with a cocktail stick!
Was totally healed within a week though.
