Buildup of saliva leading to suffocating at night

As the title says, I seem to get this every few weeks, build up of saliva when im sleeping, which will end up in me waking up, sitting upright and trying really hard to breathe.

Had this again last night, and took me about 40 seconds before I could breathe - and scared the crap out of me (and the other half!)

Any ideas?

Saliva? Sounds more like sleep apnea to me... are you overweight?
