I went on a 15 mile walk yesterday. I can easily run this distance, no problems at all. However despite wearing the same footwear (good running shoes) I've developed blisters on both feet, very annoying.

What's the best way to get them to heal, and how should I prevent them in future?

I had a job when I was a wee boy (well 18) that involved walking 25 miles a day 5 days a week without a problem, and I used trainers without any issues so I didn't even think I'd have an issue!

You will be told not to burst them although for 20 years (haven't had a blister everyday for twenty years I might add) I have done just that, you can drain them with a syringe but if your in no hurry to get on your feet again leave them is the advice.

I burst them, air them and put zinc oxide over the top so I can continue.

However prevention is better than cure remember where your blisters are and when your going to walk again put zinc oxide tape on these hotspots.

Compeed is another preventive type tape you can use I didn't get on with this after 20 mile mark used to peel in my socks.

2 pairs of socks can be useful as well Bridgedale inners and sturdy Bridgedale outer.

Vaseline can be applied as well, didn't work for me.

Edited to add when I say burst them I used to put a small nic in them to drain the fluid, pop some anti-septic spray on them if your worried about infection.

Many thanks for that. I have burst them as I hate the feeling of fluid under my skin. Where can I get zinc oxide from? Cheers!

Buy some syringes.Lance the blister and squeeze out the fluid, using syringe to extract the last drops.Smother with iodine.Cover with plaster.

The iodine part is very important.Done this myself,it only stings a little bit.

After 2 days cut away the loose flesh.

Ouch do you remember zinc benzine? Banned it in the end but great for burning skin nerve cells.

I have some condition where I get blisters by walking small distances. Its a genetic thing and runs through my family so i'm a expert on blisters unfortunately lol.

Basically with blisters you get two stages. First stage is when the blister is coming up, its very sore and tender, at this stage you need to leave it alone and just live with it.

The second stage is where the blister has reached a stage where there is no pain and the blister has stopped growing, this is the best time to either syring it or pierce the blister with some sharp scissors.
Make sure everything is sterilised and keep the blister clean with some antiseptic liquid also make sure all the liquid is out and then cut all the excess skin either straight after or after when the skin is a bit more dry so its easier to cut and then let it to air dry.

Hope it helped

Exactly the kind of advice I was after, many thanks. I've pierced them (er with a Stanley knife blade) but it sounds like I did this too early, with the wrong tool and I need antiseptic.

As always with PH I'm amazed about the advice you can get here- we even a resident "blister expert"! smile

Thankyou to all the respondents, 2 pairs of socks also sounds like a good idea.

Dos description of stage 1 is what I meant by hot spots remember those and zinc oxide tape that area/s.

Stage 2 I never got to as it would be burst tape and then get back on my feet.

Quick update. I've purchased zinc tape and antiseptic so I'll apply tonight and use in the future. There are several on my heels, and I've obviously been walking funny as I woke up this morning with my legs in agony (d'oh) and have been walking like something out of that Monty Python sketch. I didn't know walking was so dangerous, will be sorting out proper shoes/socks for next time.
