I know the answer is contained in this thread here, but from a physiological (correct word?) view, I'd like an explanation.

http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t...

So to recap I'm 42, 5ft7" now down to 11.5st from 12st thanks to the above, I'm reasonably fit and quite toned except for some belly fat which as ever I'm trying to shift.

I can't quite get my head around how having managed over a 6/7ish hour period to extricate the entire contents (and more) of stomach, bowels, etc, and unable to eat for 18hrs, and eventually after three days get back to normal, as normal as I can to describe my diet, that I have kept to that post-sickness weight.

Obviously most of it is due to fluid and water loss, right? Someone mentioned that because of the sudden loss of nutrients and fluids, during the recovery period the body had to compensate by finding sources of energy to feed from, from elsewhere within the body, and this is what has caused my overall weight to reduce, and this has now become my 'new' weight.

Is that the correct answer? It just appears a heck of a lot to lose over such a comparatively short period of time!

By the way I'm not complaining as I'm trying to get to 10.5st by Xmas so I'm quite chuffed with the result but certainly NOT the unintended method.

I was ever so slightly above whatever weight I should be for my height and then I had a heart attack.

After 5 days in hospital I was a bit below my ideal weight. For 3 months after I stuck to a healthy diet and did a lot of walking, virtually cut out drinking as well. People said that I was looking too gaunt and skinny and I was bored so kind of fell off the wagon, returned to most of my old eating and drinking habits but took up cycling.

Now I'm back to a tiny bit above ideal weight.

Not recommended.

I lost about 3 stone in a week last year, I've only managed to put 1 back on.

How in God's name did you manage that? Or did you mean to post in the Attention Seeking thread? winksmile

That's not at all true theshrew. Your mistake is to weigh yourself at night after you have been consuming food, beverages etc and your stomach is reasonably full. When I weigh myself it is always at the same time. Once or twice a week first thing in the morning after a bowel movement. That is the only time of day to get an accurate measure.

I have been bang on 12st when weighing myself for 6ish weeks prior to the sickness. Have been bang on 11.5st immediately after and since.

Actually, it was about two years ago (using the scale of what car did I have at the time...) - I had a godawful mix of vomiting and diarrhea, coupled with permanent sweating. It was about 2.5-3 stone I lost, IIRC. Just wake up, drink fluids, lose fluids, go to sleep for 6 hours, repeat. Still don't know what caused it - and I didn't realise I'd lost that much until I weighed myself afterwards, else I'd probably have gone to the doctors... I'm a fairly large chap so I didn't become skin and bone.

I wouldn't worry too much.

I'm 6' 3" and weight in at a trim 12 - 12.5 stone. I can fluctuate half a stone within a couple of days quite easily. I can drop 8lb having spent two days stuffing my face - it makes no sense and I have stopped trying to understand it.

Conversely I find putting weight on incredibly difficult - I cannot get above 12.5 stone even if I make myself a "protein shake" every evening which consists of 1 tub of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and a tub of peanut butter - so about 3200 calories which I whizz up and drink half an hour before bed.

Net result - next to bugger all.

I seem to be able to put on over half a stone in day pretty easy. Half a stone seems allot depending on your start weight supprising how much fluid is in us.

I love it when people talk about losing weight. 1 pound of fat is 3500 calories worth of energy, so to lose one 1 of fat would mean a deficient in energy intake at the most basic level.

Say someone lost 1 stone in a week, that would equal just under 50 k calorie deficient on the week.

Weight loss on its own mean nothing without taking a electronic body mass index reading on fat levels.

I'm 100% confident that if you ate that 3200 calorie shake every evening (on top of a normal diet) you'd put on 'weight' fairly rapidly.

And I am fairly confident that despite doing it it makes no difference.

My metabolism just ups its game and burns it off. Ive tried all manner of diets to put on weight - including that crash weight gain stuff that bodybuilders and the like use. It's pointless - nothing works.

I suffered similar, couldn't eat or drink for days as anything consumed came straight out the other end. Lost a similar amount of weight, felt terrible...... and the girlfriend's bathroom rug didn't look quite the same after a puking-in-toilet-projectile-diarhoea-combo event rofl Was quite odd to pooh out clear water, guess it gave my insides a good clean out!

I think it was some dodgey eggs I ate at a service station in Monmouth, mainly because I've not eaten eggs since and the smell of them makes me feel like puking hurl

God I felt st cry

... rather than hear others' stories ... which is nice wink ...

... can someone with the scientific/physiological knowledge explain what my body was trying to do during my period of illness and recovery I am fully aware of what my weight is, but only as I've indicated, when I weigh myself first thing post-pee' post-poo pre-brekkie. The results are accurate and consistent as already mentioned.

I will continue with the vague assumption that the bit in bold above goes someway to explaining the half-stone loss.

And no I am not worried or overly bothered by it! If I was I'd have posted this sooner! It's just got me thinking, and being that I'm an inquisitive soul (from a medical family - not medical myself though) i'm interested in a better understanding of what my body was doing.

Simples.

Without wishing to sound crude, did you pooh clear water? Reason I ask is that a friend works in arse cleaning and told me that some people can lose up to a stone when they've had their inners washed out laugh

Read an article in the Telegraph where the journo and his photographer went to some Spa in Thailand where you had enemas everyday and only ate stuff to get your innards moving.

Both ended up losing quite a bit of weight and feeling better than they had done in a long time. This was just in a week.

Now doctors usually poo poo (see what I did there) this practice but according to the journo, they were getting rid of stuff that must of laid around in their guts since childhood, proved when the photographer passed a marble that he had swallowed 30 years before as a kid.

Makes you think eh?

Lost 11 stone in 7months .Hardest thing i,ve ever done . Then took me a year to loose another 2 stone. Then in 5 hours lost 1 stone when the surgeon cut the extra skin away .And all done with a diet not a band .And cost me 5k for the surgery. That was 10 years ago.Kept weight stable for 9 years but it has started to creep up a little . So back on diet again .Unfortunately i have to keep to low calories to keep my weight stable .If my calorie in take goes up be 200 calories a day i put weight on quicky .I have to keep to 1200 cals a day to keep stable with a bit of exercise. Not a gym man iam afraid.
