Food to tide me over for a run
Discussion
Inspired by the "lose a stone in a month" thread I am contemplating doing the NHS "Couch to 5k in 9 weeks" due to being really unfit, my BMI is the skinny side of ok so I'm not overweight but am very unfit for my age (32).
Getting up earlier than I currently do (0645) doesn't appeal to me at all so my time to do running would be in the evening when I get home from work, a problem with this is that I am normally hungry when I get home.
My question is what could I eat to tide me over for a 30-45 minute run without eating a full meal (I know if I have dinner first I wont do the run) and without filling me up so much that I wouldn't eat a full meal after the run?
Oh and the moon on a stick would be nice too while we're at it
Thanks

Good on ya chap!
Physiologically you won't need to take in any nutrition for a run of that duration, but preparing for training is a good idea whilst you're at work - keeping hydrated throughout the day and having small meals.
Personally I just make sure I've had something a couple of hours before I'm due to go out - today it's chicken & pesto in a seeded tortilla which I'll eat at about half five.
If I was to eat anything less than an hour before training, it'd probably be something like a banana, but most of the time I don't bother. A lot of my runs start at 6am (having got out of bed at 5.59!!) - at the moment they're between 7 & 12k and I don't bother eating until I get back - basically because I can't stomach anything that early.

Thank you.
I wasn't sure if I would need anything before doing a run like that. I will eat my normal lunch (peanut butter sandwich etc., bag of crisps and a banana) at about 1300. But you think I should also "snack" throughout the afternoon? Maybe another banana or other fruit?
I'm not really a fan of salad type foods and would consider my eating habits to be very caveman like. I certainly don't have anything near "5 a day"

No, you've got plenty of "onboard" fuel for that run, so no need to have anything.
I wasn't really advocating "snacking" as such, more spreading your meals out throughout the day - nutrition is very much an individual thing, but doing that is just good practice really.
As far as what you eat goes, well I think everyone knows what's good for them, but that doesn't always tally with what you like to eat! Provided you're trying to get close to a good diet and knowing the occasions when you're not achieving it - that's more of the battle . . . none of us are saints!

I often run at 7pm having last eaten at about 1pm with no difficulties. Keeping hydrated during the day is important and if I feel particularly hungry I might have a banana mid-afternoon.
Bear in mind that if you were running before work, you'd probably be running 12 hours after your last meal.
