Not sure if this is the right place for this but not really looking for the inevitable banter that goes with any post in The Lounge and this seemed like the best option.

I've been having bouts of extreme anger for a while, over really trivial and stupid things.

No violence or particular aggression towards people, just a stupid, John Cleese style yelling at inanimate objects and the injustices of the laws of physics when the tiniest thing goes wrong, at certain times. The odd broken cup here and there, but nothing more serious than that. It then passes really quickly, and sometimes gets replaced by self pity, or sometimes a good mood.

I have always had an element of this with extreme frustration, but the last few months it seems to have got much more frequent and at a much lower trigger point.

Might make more sense if my life was falling apart, but during the period that this seems to have got worse things have been going really well. New business is making money, girlfriend is pregnant and I'm moving into a new house next week which I'm really excited about. And I don't feel particularly stressed by that either, though obviously there's a lot to think about.

At the moment it's stupid and embarrassing rather than seriously damaging, but I'm wary of it getting worse and about it causing problems in future.

If it makes a difference, I'm 33, in fairly good health. I probably drink more than I should, but not daily, not usually to massive excess. And don't do any other drugs except cigarettes.

Anyone experienced similar? Or got any suggestions on how to control it better?

Have you recently started training harder, perhaps buoyed by the confidence from other parts of life? I find that when I'm really pushing for a new target in lifting my testosterone levels are noticeably higher than when I'm just maintaining, which makes me noticeably more aggressive.

Interesting idea. I did step it up a bit a few months ago but have fallen right off again recently. Never really gone in for heavy weight training though, just basic stop-being-a-fatty stuff.

Sleeping patterns are ok, concentration is all or nothing, but I've always been like that. Have been feeling pretty drained at times and definitely not as much energy as I had a few years ago.

Sounds like me I can get quite badly irritated by the smallest of things very quickly but then it passes as quickly as it came.

Was putting the Christmas tree lights up today and as soon as they became slightly tangled I could feel myself getting angry.
Yep, that's just the sort of thing. My coffee pot felt the wrath this morning. How dare it spill coffee. And no it wasn't the way I poured it.

Maybe it's a relatively benign form of release?

I find without training my natural levels of aggression rapidly increase.

One of the reasons I love training so much is its my chance to release all of my natural aggression, I've always been this way and always need to train to get rid of it.

I find weight training works but not so much cardio. With weight training I'm a very calm person, I also find it makes me feel very positive about everything.

I have been out of the gym for 3/4 years. Prior to that I would go all the time for 2/3years and was in good shape. I have went straight back to the weights 5 x 5 and feel much better within a few weeks. I foeget about work, family, what my plans are and feel much better. If you enjoy doing weights OP, get someone to show you the PERFECT form for rows, deadlift, squats, bench etc and focus on these. Poke all that isolation nonsense.

As a result I feel less angry/frustrated over minor issues and get on with my life easier.

I go through stages of this too. Don't rule out being pregnant (not you personally, of course) and moving. Even if these are positive, big changes can subconsciously cause underlying stress.

Start exercising again/a little bit more. Try it for a week and see if it has an effect.

Good luck.

New business, about to become a father and you're moving?

No matter how 'well' these things are going, they're all big issues on their own - all three at once?

That's what I was thinking.

You don't need to feel stressed, to actually BE stressed.

I live in Bangkok....

Underlying stress is most likely a factor.

I'm going to hit the weights tomorrow and see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions, and it's good to know I'm not the only one who shouts at inanimate objects for no reason at all!

I do this all the time.

Mostly it involves things getting snagged up resulting in much shouting, thumping and then occasionally ripping/smashing tangled things up and then groaning in regret.

And that's just with my patients.
