Having just started doing Squats and deadlifts etc, I've got what feels like a sore back. How can you tell if this is soreness from bad form or just DOMS from working out?

For me,I find the difference is

Bad Back - crookedness in the body and dull aching pain

DOMS- radiates out from the glutes and means sitting can be painful (ohh Mrs).
Bad back is painful, Doms is sore but I had a bad problem so can tell the difference. Maybe if in doubt review training and monitor situation. If no improvement see a professional

Have a look at an anatomical diagram. Pinpoint the pain then you'll know. Is it on the spine? Besides, if it is really back pain, you will know!!

If you squeeze the muscle and feel pain to the touch then it is likely to be DOMS. Also, DOMS pain should gradually subside over a period of 3-6 days. If your pain last longer than that, it is unlikely to be DOMS.

If the pain is in the same muscle you've used during the exercise/s it's most likely delayed soreness. If it's a sharp pain or one that radiates down your back and

hamstrings you might have nerve impingement/damage.It's unlikely though.

^ I'd go with that.

DOMS kinda feels just like bruising, to touch and to move. It's usually accompanied by stiffness that will get worse over 24-48 hours or so before it gets better, and paritcularly accelerated if you immobalise the muscle.

Any other pains - sharp, soreness, aches, throbs, tingles, shooting - probably isn't DOMS.

Apply Occam's Razor though!
