PH Opticians - eye test query

I would have said not to worry at this stage, but you should get to the hospital quickly; sometime the earlier they can catch something the better the outcome. I got referred to the eye hospital 20 odd years ago as a result of an eye test, if it hadn't been picked up or had delayed things, could have ended up blind in one eye; rather than just degraded sight. Yours, may turn out to be nothing, but why wait 4+ weeks to find out.

- sphere means you are short sighted. Value is simply a numerical figure, the higher it is the more myopic (short sighted) you are. 8 is quite high but not enough to get any sympathy!Cyl(inder) means you have astigmatism so at 35 degrees you are -8.25 but at 125 you are -8.75.
Add is for reading and will go up as you get older.
Your reading prescription is then -6.00/-0.50x35 and the same principle for your L.
Hi there,
Interesting read, I have a quick query too... I have had two eye tests (within 2 weeks of each other) recently with quite different results as below. Should I be concerned about the differences:
Eye test 1:
R SPH 0.00
R CYL -0.50
R AXIS 175.0
R Near +1.00
L SPH 0.00
L CYL -0.75
L AXIS 8.0
L Near +1.00
Eye test 2:
R SPH +0.25
R CYL +0.25
R AXIS 95.0
R Near +0.75
L SPH -0.50
L CYL +1.25
L AXIS 100
L Near +0.75
Distance Visual Acuity 6/5
Near Visual Acuity 6/9.5
I wanted to order reading glasses from one of the above opticians, but the results have got me a little concerned on the accuracy of the prescriptions. I don’t totally understand the results and so not in a position to say whether there is an issue or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

There are 2 different ways of writing prescriptons(positive and negative cyl) and then you add the distance and reading addition together to get the reading prescription so if you put both prescriptions in the same form.Interesting read, I have a quick query too... The first one is RE +1.00/-0.50x175 LE +1.00/-0.75x8
The second one is RE +1.25/-0.25x5 LE +1.50/-1.25x10
So the second prescription is slightly stronger especially in the left eye but probably within the normal subjective varriations you get when doing a sight test.

HelenT, sincere thanks for this, it has put my mind at rest a bit. If I am now ordering some reading glasses, would you go with the latter set of results? Or the former?
Thanks in advance
If you've not worn glasses before, I'd probably opt for the first prescription as less difference between the two eyes, and a slightly lower correction for astigmatism in the left eye (that's the cyl part of the prescription, so a difference horizontally and vertically in lens power, to use optician speak "your eye is more like a rugby ball, than football in shape"). This may make things slightly off-true with the glasses on at first but usually your brain adapts. Thanks in advance
If you've currently got reading glasses which your struggling with or have really hung on before admitting you need them go for the second stronger prescription. Easiest thing is to get them made up where you had the test done and then if there is a problem it's quickest to sort out, unfortunately testing eyes is a bit of a subjective business and you can't always get it right first time
