pulling a tooth - HOW MUCH FFS!!!

like most people I hate going to the Dentist (although I like the pain!!!) anyway - when I was about 20, I cracked a tooth on a metal spring (dont ask) and 22 years ago I had a root canal done and then done again 6 months later because the f
king wker of a dentist left a load of stuff in there and it got infected blah blah blah
Since then its generally been fine - a bit of a twinge now and then and today TWINGE!!!
anyway - I guess the time has come when the tooth has absolutely had it and its got to be pulled as there is no real chance of saving it - which I am okay with generally.
The dentist I now go to is an idiot - thats it - I D I O T - in a 30 min session (ever time I see him) he spends 25 mins playing with and cursing his fking PC - he has always done this every time I go in - not being very tactful I always make a direct comment in this regard which he doesnt seem to understand.
Today he gave me 3 options for sorting my tooth out (its a side one - big) anyway to pull it leaving a gap . . . £400 - but he wouldnt recommend leaving a hole as the rest of my teeth will slip LOL - so for another £2500 he will put in an implant which I shouldnt ever have problems with and the last option would be to try and save the tooth and then cap it £1500 all in - but thats on the basis of redoing the root canal and being able to save the tooth - which he is not hopeful of!!!!
I am in the wrong profession - £3000 for an implant FFS - £500 to pull a tooth - I am seriously thinking that he is taking the piss - so whats the going rate for pulling a tooth - professionally speaking of course?

If you have such a low opinion of him, why don't you find another one ?
Or an NHS one if you are concerned about cost ?
On the NHS, £47 will see that tooth pulled. You can leave the gap or get a denture to fill it for £204. No other options are likely to available (on the NHS, although they may be discussed or offered privately).

You need to find a new one. I have just had a root canal re-done on one of my big back teeth. Have to go back next week to have the temp filling removed , everything checked then a longer term temp filling put in. Then in around 3 months I am back to have a full cerec crown fitted. Looking at around £700 all in at the moment.
But as his partner did the original root canal 2 years ago that then got infected last week we will be talking about a discount on that price.

They certainly seem to charge crazy money, but it's a given in any private medical profession I guess. I don't have a problem with it, but I've yet to see value for money in the UK. I dare say I will when I move to the US though 
I had a couple of implants (not in my chest, deceptive appearances etc), first done in the UK to the tune of a few grand by a supposedly good dentist that I spent a long time looking for. Came highly recommended and for the check-up type stuff he's decent enough, if a touch expensive. Couple of years later I went to the dentist in Dubai after paying off a ship and the guy couldn't believe how poorly done it was. Had them replaced, a couple of RCTs required, as well as the usual fluff. Cost a fraction of the price and even the temporary one I had in for a couple of days was miles better. If I ever need any major work done again I'll be getting on a plane and it'll still work out cheaper.
I'd rather pay for private dentistry for various reasons, I don't care if they're driving Bentleys and serve £20/kg coffee in Alessi cups from a £2.5k Jura machine (as my dentist does) if the quality of the work the guy does reflects the price I pay. Good for him if he's loaded because he does something well. But when I can take a holiday and get better quality work done for the same price or less, it's a no brainer for me.

Root canals can get re-infected at any time. Risk of having a root canal. This should have been discussed when initial treatment was done.A lex said:

The last NHS dentist I went to was German, I wasn't impressed by her at all though. She checked my teeth then declared that I had some plaque, but not enough to clean. Surely if there is enough to see, there is enough to clean?. NHS requires dentists to do treatment that is required to bring you to dental fitness. My childhood dentist used to brag about how he lived next door to Cliff Richard.
I must have had every tooth filled (no anaesthetic), and as a result of the trauma, didn't visit a dentist for another 20 years.
The verdict when I finally grew the balls to go to a dentist as an adult - recommended by a dental phobic who had in turn been recommended by another dental phobic - your teeth are fine. No work needed.
Ah, the relief. They could have fleeced me.

I'm paying £47 for a possible root canal, gum clean, plague removal and then an extra £90 for a different filling in white. If the root canal needs filling I'll pay extra for white. This includes the check up and xrays too, so basically that's the total cost for sorting out my teeth after I didn't go to the dentist for a while...12 years! (shameful I know)

Agreed. But I am a very good customer, my spend averaging £2k a year for the last 6 years (not including check ups etc) and he's already told me he'll be giving me lot of this at cost price as its re-doing previous work, including a new cerec as the old one broke when he drilled it for the root canal work. He did tell me that might happen but again he's going to give me a good price to replace it.As a previous poster has already said I am having to spend all this money to undo / repair all the NHS work that was carried out when I was younger. I think the word he used when he first looked at my teeth was 'butchered'
