Having suffered from lower back pain and sciatica for most of my adult life, I get lots of relief from using a foam roller or medicine ball to stretch out my gluteal muscles and I follow with some stretching of the the glutes and hip flexors. I have also benefitted from doing weighted squats.

Try it out if you haven't already..

If your piriformis is tight I don't think there's a lot you can do by yourself to fix it. I know it's witchcraft to the NHS but find an osteopath in your area and give them a try.

I suffered with sciatica for almost 2 years, before having an op to sort out the prolapsed disc that was the cause - I sympathise completely.

do all the stretching exercises you've been given, and don't be afraid to try out others; different ones may work better for you.
I've recently started using a foam roller at the gym and it's made a huge difference as my sciatica was threatening a return.
