I'm just wondering what supplements everyone takes?

After a very hedonestic 15+ years, I now find myself with kids and wanting to 'repair' the damage. Some might say these are placebos, but they work for me!

So I'm taking:-

Milk Thistle (clean the liver)
Acai Berries (Good antixoident for immune system, also good for metabolism)
Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil (Heart)
Udo's Choice Beyond Greens (just started this one, but good for making up the 5 a day)
Occasional Berroca to perk up on tired days

Over to you.........

Cod liver oil.

I get the rest from my food. I would drop the cod liver oil except that means I'd have to eat fish everyday and that would get tedious.

I take Magnesium, Vit D and Calcium and a multi Vit.

Also take a protein powder post workout and a creatine supplement morning and night.

Need to spend sometime reading up on which fish oil product I would like to add to the list to improve Omega 3:6 ratio.

Surely oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, etc) a couple or three times a week and a few nuts and seeds do the job?

1. 500mg vitamin C (religiously). It's one of the most important vitamins since your body can't store it and most people don't get nearly enough - the 'official' RDA of 60mg was intended to prevent scurvy.

2. A 3-6-9 omega oil supplement. A balanced supplement is important since an excess in one will lead to a deficiency in the others. (Says my mate who's a post-doctoral researcher on it.)

Apart from that I eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, plus nuts and seeds for their natural vitamin E content.

What are you, a bird? wink

I hit the cod liver oil too, the extra strong stuff.
Vitamin C, 500 mg.

Then the rest is diet.

but if my diet was decent and I wanted to supplement it I'd go for:

- whey postworkout with a decent carb source
- multi vit even though uptake levels are usually pretty low
- omegas if I didn't eat things like wild salmon and have decent oils every day

What do you think our ancestors did, popped down Boots to pop a few pills? The typical modern-day Western diet has an excess of omega 6 oils/fats and a deficiency of omega 3.
I've learnt this through various t'interweb 'experts' so it must be true. Unles you believe the other half of the t'interweb 'experts' who say the opposite. Flip a coin dude.

I take Omega 3, what's 6 all about?

6 is also an EFA but is found in many oils and fats widely used and especially processed foods. It's often seen that the ratio should be between 1:1 and 3:1 but is more commonly 20:1. That is why many supplement with Omega 3 when they may do better to cut back on 6. Probably.
Not the most respected source, but in a nutshell:
mirkin said:
Eating too much omega-6 and too little omega-3 causes clots and constricts arteries to increase risk for heart attacks, increases swelling to worsen arthritis, and aggravates a skin disease called psoriasis. It may block a person's ability to respond to insulin, causing high insulin and blood sugar levels and obesity. It increases hormone levels of insulin like growth factor-1 that causes certain cancers.
Taken from here: click. You'll also find plenty who disagree with this.
