Hi all, I'm looking to get an iPod for the gym. I currently use my iPhone and although it does a good job, it's pretty bulky and not ideal for running/weights.

I've seen the 2GB shuffle for around £45, and the 8GB touch screen nano for around £100, both on amazon.

What do phers use?

Whatever that tiny thing is with a clip. Never used one but if I had to choose, I'd want something that I wouldn't notice is there. You can then clip it on to your trousers or a wristband... or the PH perennial favourite... an armband. biggrin

Not a fan of the shuffle - don't like the idea of not being able to choose what I listen to.

Nano's are fab little things though. I've got a real craving for one that will have to get scratched at some point!

Just got a Nano for Christmas. Great bit of kit but I was forced to use Itunes to load the music as my usual software doesn't work.

Good functionality with shuffle and shake to move to next track. Looks cool too but not the loudest thing on the planet. Just loud enough with decent in ear phones. My over the ear gym ones were crap as I could still here the gym music and noise over it. Ipod ones kept falling out.

Nano -if you want a acreen and want an Apple product. Lots of options from other maufacturers. I am sure you could start a "mega thread" if you posted this on Computers, gadgets etc.

This is what pisses me off. Everyone who want to listen to music or whatever uses an MP3 player/ipod device so why the terrible piped music banging out? grumpy

I have an iPhone but I bought a shuffle for the gym and it's great - I frequently update the music with only the tracks I really want to listen too which saves a lot of fannying around.

I use a Sansa clip. It may not be a iGadget but it's 8gb for about £40 and has a screen. No proprietry software needed just drag on what you want. Twice the product of the shuffle and half the price of the nano. Easy choice in my book. When mine broke recently I replaced like for like and I never bother doing that it was simply the still the best bang for the buck 3 years later.

I use the touchscreen nano with an arm band.

I find the arm band is fine for doing weights as well as running, for which I thought it may have got in the way.

At first hated the nano as couldn't skip on songs easily. Once I worked out you can double click the power button to skip on the song, it has been brilliant. Also has radio which is useful when you get bored of your music.

I have a shuffle which I have used for years. It doesn't have a screen so you can't pick the tracks as easily. I only have about 30 tracks on it at a time anyway.

I quite like it anyway because it hasn't got any weight to it.

As the OP has already got an iPhone and, I presume, using iTunes a Nano is prob just easier.

I've got an iPhone and use iTunes, but have a samsung mp3 player for the gym and it's a pain! The player is great, its just a faff having to use 3 different programmes to manage music and play lists. I also like to listen to podcasts while I'm working out. iTunes doesn't like this as it keeps thinking that I never listen to the podcasts and automatically stops downloading them furious

I know I could us different software to download these podcasts, and it's morally wrong to buy more Apple products because of a flaw with their software (iTunes). But a nano would make my lift easier. And it's very shiny biggrin

Oh god, I'm becoming a fanboy...

there is software out there so you can use just a normal folder view to transfer music onto ipods/iphones etc.

makes it soo much easier, you don't have to worry about all this synchronising rubbish which enevitably means you are going to have to wipe stuff at some point because its so counterintuitive and badly planned.

I use my either my i phone or my i pod in the gym with different clips and bands. I know what you mean about bulk - the straps weigh as much as the gadget.

A nano would be perfect - they're tiny, got a screen and big enough to put a gym collection on. Unfortunately, just not big enough to get my entire music collection on, which is why I've got my i pod classic.

I use my iphone too (4), and when running simply put it on the machine in front of me rather than having it in my shorts.

For weights it can be a bit of a pain but so long as you can find a zippered/velcro'd pocket it stays in ok!

philips gogear clip, best one for running etc. Tiny and rechargable with 12hrs play and no moving parts to distort the sound.

Nano + These headphones = Win

Oh and buy shorts with zipped pockets so you don't need to bother with the strap on the arm.

I really like my iRiver S10, but the reviews here aren't too clever: Click.

Shake and shuffle is a right pain in the arse if you're on the running machine moving like a distressed bison like I usually am.

My opinion is still Ipod Nano though, but not with the standard ipod headphones, theyre not great IMO.

I have an ipod nano after finally giving into Apple. It's the mark 2, it's ace, one of my best purchases ever.
